While sorting thru the reloading stash today, I found a good bit of Blue Dot which I knew I had, and a good many 44cal 180gr Lead Flat nose bullets that I didn't know I had. So naturally, I now need some 44 spl plinking loads. There's a fair amount of hot blue dot load data out there, but minimal light loads. I'm thinking 180gr @ 750-800 fps in 4.5-7.5 in barrels. Anyone have anything they'd like to share. I'm thinking somewhere around 8-10grs. And yes, I already know the blue dot will be dirty and not burn completely at this pressure level, but I've got A LOT of it and am not currently using it for anything else.

Best you are going to do is use the start load for Blue Dot, as it is meant for magnum loads.
Alliant didn't list Blue Dot with it's 44 Special data. Bullseye, Unique, or Trail Boss are more suitable powders for light lead 44 Special loads. |

Old Hercules Catalog (4/88) lists Blue dot loads from .380 ACP through .45 Win Mag!!!
For the .44 Spl they only list 2: 180 JHC – 13.5 Gr @ 1,020 fps 246 LRN – 9.2 Gr @ 845 fps I would substitute your 180 LFP and drop to 12.2 Gr (10%) to see what that will do for you. If they are erratic in velocity or groups spread on target, it indicates a poor choice. |

Quoted:
Universal or Power Pistol are better choices for .44 special. If you are going to use Blue Dot, make certain to use Magnum Primers even in .44 special, blue Dot has erratic ignition w/ standard primers. (found out the hard way with some .38 special loads) Interesting… The Hercules handbook differs in that all of the 38 Special and .44 Special loads are all based listed with Standard Small Pistol or Large Pistol in conjunction with Blue Dot. Even the 38 Special +P loads list with Fed 100 (Small Pistol) primers. Of course any loads for “Magnum” cases list Magnum primers being used. Hoping MntnMnWV will give this a try and let us know how it works out for him??? |
