| I'm using once fired LC brass, headstamped 07. Sizing is a pain, it requires a ton of lube. The issue I am having is that the cases don't seem to fully size the neck and I'm getting a small ring right above the base of the shoulder. Has anyone seen this before? I'm only having this issue with the LC brass, commercial sizes the shoulders just fine. |

More effort to size an LC case vs. a commercial case?
It's because of the thinckness of the brass or because it needs to be resized further (maybe/probably it was fired in a MG). As for the "ring." Besides the above (see pic)? I need to ask.........does your re-sized brass fit into a case gauge? Aloha, Mark PS........Larger case (in comparison to the .223 Rem.).......means, more effort needed to re-size. |

IF you see a "ring" of used (or dirty) lube just above the junction (on the neck).......well, it's because the sizer die has only gone that far. If that is the case....... ME.......I'd want to get the brass further into the die. I'd like the "lube line" to be at the junction (neck and shoulder), to ensure that the entire neck was re-sized. IF, you got your line there.......you should be GTG. Anyway........ This is how I do mine.
6) I use a single station press (RCBS Rock Chucker). You could use a progressive Dillon IF you wanted to. It's a personal choice. But, with whatever press you choose, consider shell plate/shell holder and/or press "flex.” I use a regular FL size/de-capper die, NOT the small base dies. To begin, lube your cases. Then, FL size and de-cap, 1 or 2 cases for a test. Gauge the re-sized case(s), to confirm that the "correct size" has been achieved. I use a Forster Products case gauge (the Wilson or Dillon case gauges are also popular choices). Insert a case into the case gauge. The headstamped end of the case, needs to be at or between the high and low cuts on the gauge, to pass. This checks the headspace. While the other end, is used to check if the case will need to be trimmed (a job for later on). IF, it’s not the “correct size,” your die setting will need adjustment. Lower the ram and simply screw the die in or out a little. Don’t forget about the lock nut. Then, re-size another couple of test cases and check your work again. Repeat the test and adjustments, as needed. When you're satisfied that your test cases are properly re-sized, do the entire lot (remember to test some cases throughout the run). What you do, or don't do, is up to you. HTH. Aloha, Mark PS.........too much lube......and you could end up with dents on the shoulders. |

I don't think your sizer die is screwed down far enough. +1 Also, you said you were using plenty of lube. You can use too much lube. My RCBS manual says use NO LUBE on outside of neck and shoulder. Lube the body very lightly and inside the neck very lightly before sizing. What does your manual say? |
| Change your lube to either Imperial sizing die wax or dillon spray lube. I bought a bunch of LC 308 brass and I'm not having to use insane amounts of force to size them. More effort than commercial brass, but not that much more. Might also help to clean the inside of your die with some carb cleaner/brake cleaner/rubbing alcohol and then apply lube to the inside surfaces. |
