Set everything out night before, set up dies filled the powder drop, etc. to load the following day.  Loaded 350 rounds of .223 55gr FMJ, didn't want to take the remaining 50 primers out and have a half full sleeve so i decied to wait until today and start developing a load with 55gr SP.  Got the correct bullets down and started recording brass, powder, PRIMER etc i was using and something hit me why were the small pistol primers laying on the bench!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  how could i miss this twice WTF.

so the dilema 350 rounds with CCI 500 small pistol primers in a rifle cartridge.

save the powder and projectile and scrap the brass?

What's the difference in small pistol and small rifle primers?

I have seen some guys post threads on shooting them during this primer shortage, but don't remember the outcomes. You can pull the bullets, and press them out and re-prime. The pistol primers
should still be usable as well. I've done it before with primers.

Well how tough is the cup, that's the question.  A lot of suggestions to use the magnum primers is to get the thicker cups not so much for the extra spark.

I wouldn't say it was a major fuck up but only because you caught it before you shot them. It would have been a major fuck up if you would have shot them and hurt your self or firearms. This would be a major inconvenience.

I would pull bullets dump powder de-prime (very carefully) and start over.

OK, i'm thanking God because i did catch it soon enough.

De-prime?  i have a RCBS de-primer thats in press now on station 1 to punch out anything in flash hole.  What's the chance of a primer going off?

I've use a decapping die to deprime at least 1000 cases of live primers for one reason or another and I've never had a mishap that resulted in either the primer being damaged or going off.  Go easy, don't slam the handle down to punch out the primers and you should be fine.

IF you decide to try them, please be sure to have your weapon sefely pointed downrange befroe dropping the bolt.

Chances are you will have a higher probability of slam fire.

you should probably go ahead and resize them as well

Just a suggestion, don't get a large build up of live primers in the catcher,
chances are you won't set one off, but if one did go off it might create a chain reaction.
I would dump the expelled primer catcher often.

UHhh, CCI-400 is small rifle primers, and you used them in a rifle case,,, no problem there.... CCI-500 is small pistol primer, I use them all the time

save the powder and projectile and scrap the brass?
No, if you indeed used CCI-400, you have used the correct primer for .223/556

Just go slow and easy. Remember you are depriming them backwards from the anvil side.

Probably don't have to tell you,  but wear eye and hearing protection while depriming.

Hope you have a collet bullet puller, it will make pulling the bullets so much easier.

Not "probably"....more like "will".

I wish I had the link but somewhere I heard about someone who had a bunch store in like a baby food jar or something and they went KB!

have the hornady puller so that won't be a problem, just time consumming.

Does anyone know what makes a small rifle primer different from a small pistol? i'm assuming it would ignite hotter, being pistol powder is a faster burning powder than rifle in general and wanting a quicker burn rate

I wouldn't make a sweeping generalization about what a mfn will do or what spec. he'll use to produce a product.

Example:

Different mixtures for their primer compound.

or

One may have a thicker cup.  But, maybe another company might achieve the same results with a different alloy cup that might be thinner?

I would NOT shoot them.... unless you want to single load them.

There was a thread, last week maybe, where a guy ran a test using pistol primers
to see what would happen.  He said his gun ran full auto for 2-3 rounds each time.

Other than that... I don't recall him saying there were any other issues....
though, that's a pretty big one!

Here it is.... First post...

I have used CCI Small Pistol primers in loads with WC844.  No problem.  Same accuracy as with SR primers.  No primer leaks.  Shoot them.

DO NOT SHOOT THEM.

Pull the bullets, put the powder back and start over with new brass and primers.

If you choose to deprime... Be careful, wear hearing protection and eye protection.

decided to pull everything. no sense of someone or myself getting hurt even if it wasn't b.c. of my mistake my luck it would point to it.  also it will be a very painful reminder to check my components before and after.  (Also wouldn't want to waste the $$ i have invested in this weapon)

thanks everyone
