RCBS Competition Die comes with competition extended shellholder from my .223 Rem.
Do I need to use this or is it something as an option for longer heavier bullets or for seating closer to lands, etc? I am reloading for Mini 14 & AR at this time. |

In keeping with AFCOM tradition Most people use REGULAR full length sizing two die sets. Then, "Compettion Dies" for a Mini 14...........well, it's your money. Just having fun. Aloha, Mark PS........I don't own a set of RCBS Competition Dies........but, could you explain WHY a special shell holder is needed? I'm serious. Having never seen a set........I just assume that a shell holder is a shell holder, unless it needs to match with the die in some special way. And, yes, I know that an extended shell holder is taller than a standard shell holder. Then, IF you were actually talking about a special bullet seater plug..........that would be different. And, yes, I know about the "micro adjustment" bullet seater feature that a competition dies set offers. |
| It has an extended shell holder because the die is longer than normal due to the 'window' you put the bullet into instead of holding it on top of the case as the ram goes up. Use a normal shell holder and the bullet will not make contact with the seating stem. Makes them impossible to use with a progressive press. |
