I was reloading some trap rounds this AM and had two that wrinkled half way down the hull when I crimped them.  Are they shootable still if they chamber into the gun?  Also, what causes this?  This is the first time it has ever happened to me.

I just chambered in my 870 and they went in smooth.  The hulls are Win AA.  I use a Mec Jr.  The only difference I see from these two hulls compared to the others of the batch are they don't have writing on the side of the hull that says Winchester AA.  The others do and reloaded fine.  What is up with my issue?

Chances are the hulls are not AA hulls since you did not have the markings on the side.  I would just not shoot those and maybe recover the shot and powder.

Different hulls have different internal depths that your componets will stack up inside.  That is why every hull has a different wad, shot and powder combination.

I got looking at them when I got home.  They are AA hulls.  Did this happen because they were older hulls?

If they will chamber, shoot 'em.

Sometimes a little more wad pressure will fix that problem.  I'm betting the wrinkle occurs in the last crimp die.

the newer style will do that, they're 3 piece, sometimes the wad will catch on the inner ridge of the basewad.

Older ones can do that too if you apply too much crimp

If  you can load them without them mushrooming and loosing all your shot, you can shoot 'em

Your final crimp pressure is a bit too high for those hulls.  They will likely chamber in a field gun but will not chamber in a tight chambered target gun (Perrazi, Kreighoff).  If they will chamber they will be safe to shoot unless the "stacking" length is excessive due to an overly large powder or shot charge.

After reading the replys, I got to thinking.  It did happen on the last and final crimp.  I would have felt it on the second to last crimp if it happened then.  So they are good to go?
