I might start reloading shot shells.
Can you use range pick ups? What should I look for, and stay away from like the plague? |

SG hulls aren't like brass cases when it comes to re-loading. Different brands, colors and construction have different recipes for re-loading. Then some hulls aren't meant for re-loading at all.
You should READ UP on the subject before you even start collecting hulls. Aloha, Mark |
| Yes, and range scrounging will be your best source of empties. Also, check any local place that holds spot shoots as they usually have thousands laying around looking for a new home. Leave those shells with aluminum heads or casings and just pick up the ones that are brass. Not all hulls, even those with brass, are created equally. Some have a tapered interior and others are straight walled. Matching up the correct replacement wad gives you the best possible reload. And, thankfully, aftermarket wads by companies like Claybuster and Nothing But Dust or Duster Wads are way cheaper than the factory replacement wads from Remington or Winchester. Most of their web sites, along with your powder of choice, will have lots of reloading data that gives you your pressure and fps numbers depending on what powder, wad and primer combo you use with what shell. Remington Gold Medal and Winchester AA are probably the 2 best and most prolific out there and I personally reload the Winchester AA with the Blue Duster wad, Winchester primer and Aliant Powder's American Select for trap. Just check all the normal sources for reloading; manuals, powder manufacturers and other component mfgs. Also, shotgunworld.com has a good reloading message board, too. And don't forget to pick up the ones you don't reload; you can always trade them to somebody for some empty brass or more empties of your brand. |
