This is one of the targets I use.  I have a series of these with different numbers of aiming points in three colors (green, blue, and black).  The green and blue targets give enough contrast to see at 300 yards with a scope, yet allow the bullet holes to be seen in the white background.

I designed these targets in Powerpoint.  I see this one needs a fix to get the middle column of squares on the bottom.

Okay, so I haven't had any real training in shooting, so this may be a stupid question...

What is the square for at the top of the circle?  Is it just something different to aim at?

I did a little bit of googling to see if I could find something on it.  I didn't, but I did come across these and found it interesting.

Incremental Load Development Method

Ladder Target

I think I am going to have a hard time convincing the range officers at Busch or Henges to let me go mark my holes after every shot.

The square gives a good aiming point when mirage is bad and obscurs the bullseye.  It's an alternate aiming point.

You can do load workups just fine without marking each shot in turn.  If you have a hard time keeping track, use a duplicate target at the bench to mark where each shot falls.

The targets I use like the one above allow me to shoot a different load at each square.  Up close I'll use one that has 6 or 8 squares, farther out I'll use one with four or two squares, and in some cases I use a target with one square but a single load.  The target I pick depends on the gun, the distance, and the wind.
