Shot my test batch of 9mm today, 147gr. moly coated flat nose, cci 500 primers, 3.5gr. of unique. They cycled both weapons with no problems. Lots of smoke though. Is this normal?

Were they moly coated lead? Never tried those but with regular lubed lead, yes it will be
a little smokey. The newer Unique is supposed to be less smokey than the older stuff.
I' still working on 4 lbs of the older stuff, though, and with jacketed bullets its not to bad.

the newer stuff is cleaner than the older stuff, but it is still dirty, moly jacketed, moly lead, and regular lead tend to smoke more, but Unique smokes a fair bit anyways

even with all it's faults, it is still my favorite pistol caliber powder

A bit smokey but I still use it. 115jhp in the 9mm and 185jhp in the 45acp. in fact if I go back through my records I think I even loaded some up with 158jhp in the 38spcl+p specs.
One thing I do know about Unique in the 9mm is to the best of my knowledge it is vertually imposible to over load. I wouldn't try it but years ago when I started load my own I was told that in despeate messures you can dip the brass in and fill it up, cram a bullet in and go. Like I said, I wouln't try this tecnique myself, I value my guns and hands and life more than that.

yes, moly coated lead. At 18.99 lb. I can deal with smoke for my blasting ammo.

I got four 8lb jugs a couple of years ago from a going out of business sale. Believe it was priced at $40 a jug or so. Smokey, yes. Cheap, yes...
