| Hay All, just picked up my first 45LC. It's a Uberti 1875 SA Army. Picked up a box of ammo and went to he range over the weekend. Great shooter. So now I have another bullet to reload. Question is I can not find any (at good price) 45 Colt bullets. Thought I would go with jacket bullets as I hear so much about leading. Where are the 45 colt plated bullets? Seems everybody I looked at was back ordering. If I go with cast lead is there going to be a leading problem? Been told if you load slow it lessens the chance. The 45 colt is .452 diameter right? Some of the cast are .454? The 45 acp is .451 Anyone every tried 45acp bullets in 45 colt? The 0.001 difference, safe but not as accurate? Just a couple questions. If reloaded for years for .40,.45acp and several rifle rounds so I am not brand new just inexperanice with this cal. Also where are all you cowboy shooters get those bullets? Guess you use lead for cost huhh? Thanks for your help in advance. |

If'n I was you, I'd just use lead and definitely keep loads near factory velocities. The Uberti models are not considered 'strong' actions like the old model Vaqueros and the Blackhawks. As for where to get bullets, I know there are several commercial cast boolit companies floating around. As for the diameter, you could measure your chamber throats and then also slug your barrel to determine the best diameter for your gun.

I agree...Id use lead instead. I reload this cartridge for my wifes Uberti SA revolver and have had great success w/ lead over Titegroup. I havent had any probs w/ bbl leading. Then again the loads are mild. The next batch Im going to give IMR Trail Boss a shot.
ETA: I use the local gun shops 250gr .45 lead bullets and they shoot really well. Nothing special about them at all. |
| I use the same bullets for .45 ACP and .45 Colt.... 200 TC, 230 RN and RNFP. I use 250 RNFP for .45 Colt only. I cast my own but have use commercial bullets as well. For SD or Hunting loads, buy some bullets and work up a load that you like. If you really want to get crazy, slug the bore and see where it falls. |

Lots of commercial bullet casters around. Rucker was common in gun shops when I lived in DFW area years ago. 45Colt cylinder throats are usually .452 today but I have an older Uberti that is 454. Get a 100 of .452 size and try them. If they work, you are done. If not, try the 454 size. Bigger will not be the problem that smaller might be if the bullet is less than barrel groove diameter which is usually .451
45ACP bullets will often work, just be aware of the size issue. And you do not need HARD cast bullets for normal loads in 45 Colt. I use a soft alloy and don't have any leading. |

I use 7.5 grains of Unique under a 255 grain no2 alloy RNFP bullet, I have no problems with leading at all, my guns like .454 (The ubertis do, the Colt and Smiths it has to be hard) but I had to open up my cylinder throats a bit, they were a touch tight which is a known issue with Uberti, mine also have no real problem with .452 lead (had to shoot a bunch of acp bullets because I had lent out a mould)
as for jacketed, I have been shooting Hornady XTP out of them too, but not as often, and never out of historic firearms theoretically the Uberti are supposed to be .452 (except the older ones) but I doubt it makes a big deal with lead, in fact I know it doesn't unless you are cranking on your loads, and you shouldn't be out of your Remington clone anyways |
thanks for all the advice. I checked the net and found the"Missouri Bullet Company' and they have some good prices on cast lead bullets. I still have to pick up a set of dies but I have primers, titegroup powder and a couple hands full of brass. My search for loaded ammunnition turned up some pretty high prices. Cannot seemed to find anything under $30.00 per box. Been a long time since I bought ammo as I reload, have the prices gone up that much?
