I called Dillon to talk to them about their powder measure and Varget and what they thought of their powder measure's performance with extruded powder.  Mike (no, no Mike Dillon) told me that the only thing he's done to his powder measure is to take the caliber specific powder funnel and polish both the beveled opening and the barrel into the case.

He claims that his Dillon powder measure on his 650 works fine with Varget, his favorite powder, with that simple modification.  He claims that he can maintain a 0.1 grn charge-to-charge consistency with only that modification.

Been there, done that.  When I operate SLOWLY, it is within 0.3 grain, extreme spread.

What do you see if you run it at normal speed???

I performed something similar, I polished the base of the hopper, powder funnel top/inside, installed a spring on a polished powder bar assembly to take up the little bit of wobble and knocked off the leading edge of the failsafe system to reduce the clunky operation and after all said and done I get almost no variance on any powder.

Good thread.

If polishing can bet the powder vairation down to .1gr with extruded powder we should make this a sticky.

It works for some and not for others.

Personally I don't think it hurts to do the fluff and buff but I think there are alot of other variables such as static, moisture, temp of loading area, mount stability. consistency of handle motion, etc.

It already is.....sort of.  THIS is a link to it under "3: Reloading Tools & Equipment" above.

A a post to the tacked thread at the top of the forum.  If I see it there, I'll mark the thread.

I did the method that Panther308 described above.  I just started using Varget for 308win.  I tried using Varget before I did the polishing and I was getting all kinds of measures.  So I tried the poslishing and adding the spring and 9 out of 10 pulls are dead on and the one might be .1 off.

Will this help on any metal powder measure, or is it Dillon-specific b/c of the design?

? I'm not sure, I only have dillon powder measures.  It works on the dillons because you can see in a powder measure thats not polished that the metal is that dull grey kinda ruff metal(believe its from it being casted).  Once you polish everything the powder seems to move smoother.
If your meaure can be polished I don't see how it couldn't help

I think it's dillon-specific.  But obviously the CONCEPT could apply to other similar designs or designs with rough surfaces leading into the measuring chamber.

I am not happy with the consistency of my square-deal B, with the similar block design, even though I've polished it also.   I have roughly 0.3grains more on the first charge than the remaining charges (that are more consistent) when the press has been sitting undisturbed for a period of time.

when I am actively pulling the handle, the round-to-round consistency is greater (ie I am not screwing it up) but I know that has to do with the chamber probably not filling fully inbetween drops (whereas it has time to settle when I'm done, leading to a higher initial charge the next day).   It's easy enough to discharge the first fill, but annoying nonetheless and I get no-where near the repeatability of my cylinder-style Hornady powder dispenser.

I would like to fit a hornady measure onto my SDB, but I don't think that's realistic.

I polished up my Hornaday powder measure and added a baffle from Midway.

Weighed 10 charges of 25 grs of Varget.

Nine were + or - .1 gr.

One was + .2 gr.

I was happy with this.

I don't have a Hornady measure, but did you look at this Dillon powder measure adapter?  You also need an RL450 powder die.  I'm not sure if it is compatible with the SDB or not.
