Just wanted to give everyone here a heads up on what happened to me ordering from powder valley last week. I used my standard CC that I had not used since middle of September. Ordered up some powder and primers to a total of about $170 bucks...Order was placed online at work (I work for Nasa out at KSC, very very secure).
Today I was checking my bank statement online and noticed the powder valley charge and three other charges I did not make. Two were to nordstroms and one to a magazine company. I immediately phoned Wachovia and handled it with them. I then proceeded to call nordstroms and get the order information. One order was for some ecco golf shoes. The second was for some timberlands and winter gloves. Nordstroms would not give me the shipping addresses but the orders were billed to me at my home address..They did however give me the order numbers and after using the order numbers and billing info I was able to pull up the orders online and get the tracking numbers...Called UPS and splained the situation to them and they told me the address and of course they shipped them to my name. Now I live in Cocoa, Fl and the items were shipped to tallahasse florida. So I called Tally PD who told me to call Cocoa PD first....Cops just left about 5 mins ago after filing the police report. I can't believe someone would be stupid enough to place an order with enough information that if I was inclined....seriously considering it....I could get in the car drive across the state and bring the pain...But regardless I am not liable for the charges and my card is now inactive...But still the gall of someone to steal from me is hard to take...If they catch these assholes I fully intend to press charges and they will be doing some jail time. I should give them a 1 hour beat down for every minute I spent having to work this out. Its obivous the first order was to test it out as the second one was 24hrs later followed by the third. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that PV.com may not be too secure. This was the first time I used my card in two months and the last time I used it was in store. Now before anyone says I could have happened another way...My wife and I keep all bank statements and FINE shred everything else. We have never ever visited tallahasse and this address is about 3 miles from FSU. Now I can't order anyting AR related until I get my new card and even then ima start being skeptical about ordering online for a little while.... Be careful with PV.com they will be getting an email too... |

Small world. I recently paid for an on-line Powder Valley order with a credit card. Used it for another order a few days later with a different vendor.
Credit card company fraud divsion called me to ask about a charge that didn't look right. There was an earlier one to a magazine company I'd never heard of. So far I'm letting the credit card company handle it. Didn't think I would be able to track the perp down. Sounds like the same scam. Hope the cops can make a case. It does suck to have to wait on a replacement card, but then I would have been using it for a Powder Valley order again. OFG |

I've had my online card hacked three times. Credit card company acted like they didn't care. I even tracked a shipment to a HOME address in another state and called the company. They didn't even want the information I had. Said their legal department would take care of it. Once, I had several long distance charges on my statement. Company said they would cancel the card and issue me a new one. The next month, same thing. I called the long distance company and they told me card number being used. It was the card that was supposed to be canceled. They claim it sailed right on through the credit card company. This went on for 4 months. Charges still going through on the "canceled" first card. Of course, not a dime out of my pocket. I get the feeling the card companies don't care. They just stop payment and let the vendor take care of it. But the vendor that gets hurt is generally not the vendor the card was stolen from. And it doesn't help to call the order in. That info gets stored on the same vendor's 'puter that gets hacked.

Im honestly not too worried about the IT guys at work....We are talking government security clearances needed just to have access etc etc...I mean anything is possible but after OFG posted darn near the same thing im leaning more to the PV side of things...Not necessarliy saying its PV fault but it all came down after I ordered from them...I had used this card from work on several previous occasions several months ago with no issues....
Hopefully the police find these guys...the Tally PD dude was very cool on the phone and said once he gets the report he will begin working on it... |

Read your screen, typically no they can't unless some type of remote access/administration application is installed, but they almost always sniff and log all network traffic. One DOD contractor at Stennis Space Center had an IT guy that was sniffing and logging all network traffic and he would run regular expressions against the logs to find dirt on people he didn't like. He got one engineer that emailed an associate about a product he was working on though a web based email client and got the guy in hot water over violation of a NDA. If the network traffic is encrypted they would have to use a man in the middle attack to read the traffic but I have seen dsniff installed on computers where it shouldn't have been of course only to test the security of the network. Yep with OFG's story it sounds like something is wrong on the PV's side, both of you guys should let them know what's happening for sure. OK enough IT crap in the reloading section for me, sorry for the thread drift

Have you noticed that over the past 7-9 months, PV has had issues with their website? Product category pages not loading after their main page, etc.. They've had people working on it, but it seems to be a monthly deal and I wonder if this might not be related? Somebody fiddling with stuff online, trying to fix the bugs and having access to the CC info. Chris |
| Had mine hacked a while back. Went through the steps and got me going again. While they shut down my account I didn't pay my monthly balance. I thought I did and since I couldn't get in to see my account I had no idea. Tried to give me a late fee and jack my interest rate up 31.99%. Unbelievable, I love how they tried to take advantage of the situation. |
I have a debit card I use for all firearms related purchases through my credit union. It got hit last week for 3 charges to CCBill.com for $100 each and to a magazine subscription place for $0.44 .
Got it cleared up but found out the charges came form Brooklyn, N.Y., I live in Ky. The lady from CCBill.com would not give me the person's name but would to a detective. It's in the hands of the local police now but they told me nothing would come of it. |
| I agree with Callgood on the "virtual Card " use. After someone tried to charge $ 5000.00 worth of motorcycle parts to my card ( credit card company caught and stopped it ) I started using that feature for all on line purchases. I have Bank of America Visa and it is easy to do. I use the generated number once, have it expire in 2 months, and limit the amount to the purchase at hand plus wiggle room and clear it at completion. I use my card for all purchases ( airline miles ) but it showed up after an order to Lee Factory sales on line but that may be just a coincidence. |

The scam Digger658 reports is exactly the same as was run on my card. CCBill, magazines - all the same.
With 3 PV related CC scams it looks like there is more then just a random coincidence going on here. Damn shame a good supplier was hit. Still waiting for my replacement card and trying to find another powder & primer supplier. OFG |

They still have not charged my card. The order was placed last week, they called me Friday because they were out of an item and wanted to substitute another. No sweat, but as of now, still no charge and no shipped e-mail.

Typically I don’t respond to threads. However it is difficult to sit by when someone is committing slander against our company.

Our security certificate is maintained through Thawte. Again, we chose Thawte because they are one of the largest and most respected secure socket layers available. At any point in time anyone can go to our site and check the security. You can do this in several ways: 1) Pull up our home page. http://www.powdervalleyinc.com Once you have our website pulled up change the http to https. The added “s” allows you to check if a site is secure. If the site comes up then it is secure. You can do this on any website. 2)When you are placing an order and click “Place Order” the website will automatically revert from the http to https. Again, this is another check you can do on any website. 3)On the page you type in your information there is a security seal for Thawte. The website is checked daily. You can click on the seal to verify the status if you would like. 4)Based on the posters false accusations we also approached web.com and our web designer to make sure no security breaches have occurred. They both have concurred that security is intact on our site and has never been compromised. Unfortunately the damage to our reputation has already been done due to these slanderous remarks. As you already know identity theft is a huge problem. Every day millions of people have their identity stolen. Most never know how their information was stolen. For someone to start internet threads on several forums stating that any company is responsible for the theft of their information is irresponsible and slanderous, especially when the facts are contrary to statements being made. I guess I will go back to sending my orders with a check to all vendors by USPS and wait to get my stuff. In no way am I blaming P.V. Mike |
| I am a long time customer of PV and I have never had a problem with online orders. What pisses me off is when people jump to conclusions without having all the facts. It is the height of irresponsibility. You can absolutely ruin a companies reputation with such recklessness. |

Good of you to respond, Bryan. As anyone who handles credit card processing knows, if there was a real breach PVI would know it very quickly because the credit card processing company would be notifying them of the chargebacks. Merchants are penalized for excessive chargebacks.
It sounds to me like people are making connections between unconnected events and being irresponsible. Good luck to PVI. |
| I am a past customer of PV but have switched to other vendors for my personal and all my gun club's orders. Why you may wonder? Bryan, Your website is flaky, To access it and view more than the opening page the site must be opened in a new window. This problem regarding your Powder Vally website is brought up and discussed here from time to time. Shipping cost was always a mystery. The site layout looks antiquated, un-professional and appears to have been configured by a high school kid just learning to use HTML code. The cart function is worse. Some "IT" firm has taken you for a ride. I am not comfortable using the PV website. With a little effort your company could be all the You Think it is now. Just one former customer's honest opinion hoping to help. Who cares what one former customer thinks? Or 2, or is it 20, or is it 200, or 2000? All this panic buying will end someday. You may want to consider using some of the profit from this windfall to get your act together. I am impressed to see a company owner register and address his customers concerns and opinions. Not being a stranger here could also help. |

Powder Valley - i apologize if you have been offended by this post. i meant in no way shapw or form to causeany harm to your business. that being said, the bottom line is not 24 hours after using my card, i hadnt used for two months, 400 dollars in charges i did not make were on my account. I never one said you are to blame. i was merely trying to give the people who order from you a heads up that something happened. Since then several others, as shown in this thread, have had similar problems. I sent you emails and never got a reply back. if i have offended you in anyway i am sorry. In this day and age people need to know about identity theft. I was simply making an fyi from my experience. This was the first order i ever placed with you. Thanks for the good deal on aa2520 and having primers in stock cheap. Once again, i never meant to offend, i was happy with the price, quick shipping etc. But my CC info was stolen immediately after using your secure site and people need to know that whether its coincidence or not. |
