Ok last night I was processing some 6.8 brass for an upcomming precision shooting class .

I was using my Lyman case trimmer, and deburring/Chamfering tool.  I found this to be a bit inefficient.  I only got through 40 cases (sizing through chamfering), and sized another 35 and it took over an hour.

Is there a one step tool that will allow me to trim the case to length while it chamfers and deburrs the outside?  I don't need a fancy powered tool, perhaps a new cutting head for the Lyman case trimmer or something similar?  Some way to speed up the process.

Thanks for any suggestions.

RCBS makes a 3 way cutter head that will do exactly what you want to do.

ETA- only catch is Do they make it for 6.8?

The less work you want to the do the more $ you have to shell out, but if time is $, then it equals out

Rough hiearchy of trimmers

1) lathe type trimmers $30-$100 or more
1b) lathe type trimmer with 3 way cutter head (ala RCBS)
2) lathe type trimmers with power drill or other power adapter $40-$200 or more
3) Lee trimmer can be manual or powered by drill $10
4) Possum Hollow trimmer with deburring tool holder $40
5) Gracey trimmer $250?
6) Dillon trimmer $250 ish
7) Giraud trimmer $375 ish

1 thru 5 requires use of a deburring tool afterwards.
From what I read from others the Dillon cuts so cleanly it doesn't need to be deburred afterwards

1b, 7 does everything in one step: trim, deburs inside and out

6 is fastest if mounted on a progressive press with a case trimmer
7 is fastest if doing by hand

Then there's option B, trim once and use the X-die.

I've used the lathe type trimmer, hated it, switched to the Lee trimmer, bought a Possum Hollow and used it once before buying the Giruad trimmer

IF it's just the head, the case length is adjusted by the trimming tool, so I'd think I could use the cutter for a .270 Win.

I'll check it out.  Thanks.

Thanks for the info.

I've got the Lee trimmers for .223 & 6.8, but I was thinking it was not as quick as my Lyman Lathe.

Could you tell me more about the Possum Hollow unit?  I saw a post on it but it only had 2 pictures and I couldn't figure out how it worked.

small pic but good enough to show how it works.  Basically you have a tube with a cutter blade in it.  The case indexes off the shoulder and the end of the case mouth gets munched on by the cutter, shavings should fall out of the hole on the side of the tube

Top small pic shows the cutter held by their deburring tool holder in a power drill.

Trimming with this set up is simply a matter of powering the drill, inserting the case into the cutter, let it trim, then removing the case.  You'll have to deburr afterwards inside and out, the deburring tool holder can be used for this as well.

The speed of trimming comes in not having to mount the case in a lock stud or shell holder type contraption and then unmounting it after the trimming process

+1000 on the possum hollow.....I've done a couple thousand .223 with it now.  You still have to chamfer and debur, but for the money, I haven't found anything better.  I'll leave the RCBS lathe for smaller quantities of .308 and others.

I hear ya Joe, but it's not in the budget for this year, though I definately have my eye on it.

The Possum Hollow though for $40 looks like a deal if I can put it on my drill press and just leave it running as I trim...
