I plan on ordering a case guage for 308, but say I didn't have one.  How would I know if the brass is sized right.  Do I just size a little at a time, put a bullet on it, then try to chamber, if it chambers good then leave it alone; if it doesnt, then pull the bullet and size some more and repeat the process.....

Just wondering. I have only loaded 223 and thats with the case guage for it.  I'm just starting 308, it for a Rem 700P.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You could do it that way........

Or..........

www.chuckhawks.com/adjust_reloading_dies.htm

Here is how to adjust the resizing die to full length resize cases. First, run the ram to the top of the reloading press stroke with the proper shell holder installed. Second, screw the resizing die into the press until it stops against the elevated shell holder. Third, all play must be removed from the system. To do this, lower the ram and turn the die 1/8 to 1/4 turn farther into the press. Check the adjustment by returning the shell holder to the top of its stroke--you should feel the press cam over center. Now set the large lock ring and your die is adjusted to properly full length resize cases.

I try to size mine so it sits flush with the top of the case gage so I don't work the brass so much, so is this acceptable ? It cycles fine in my M1A

Just chamber a sized case, UNLOADED, in your rifle. If it doesn't chamber , you know enough to reset your size die until it does, I hope.

I recommend using the case gage, until then you can make a dummy round and see if it chambers, but it won't tell you if you oversized the case (pushed the shoulder back too far) thus causing excessive headspace
