Like thelast poster...hehehe NOPE! they will shoot 173's (the old match load for the M1D IIRC) 168's to about 2650 fps should be good to go

168gr Match is the preferred projectile for my Garand.

No problem w/ 168 gr. Match Bullets.

The two warnings about re-loading for an M1 Garand are.........

1)  Don't use bullets over 180 gr.

2)  Use powders that are close to the burning rate of IMR4895.

HTH.

Sir, AFAIK there was never a match load developed specifically for the M1D.  The M72 match ammo that used the 173gr match bullet was developed for use in service rifle competition.  It was well before my time when the 1903 was the rifle most commonly used in service rifle competition and I have no idea of the progression of ammo developed for service rifle competition rifle but M72 was probably developed in the days before the M1 was legal for service rifle competition.  The M1D has never been legal for service rifle competition.  In addition the M1C and M1D were developed specifically for use of standard issue ammo, likely M2.

FWIW, the last time I reloaded any cartridges for my garands I used about 45gr of IMR 4895, WLR primers, and the 168gr SMK.  Of all the factory ammo I've used which includes a variety of ammo originally procured from DCM/CMP, the handloads I've made were significantly more accurate than any factory ammo.  JMHO, 7zero1.

That is very close to my loads:
with a Hornaday 168gr match BTHP I am running 46gr of 4895
with a Sierra 168gr match I am running 47.5 gr of 4895

Master Po's comments
These loads only duplicate military spec. velocities for the given bullet weight, using commercial cases and powders. If you are using military cases, drop all charges by 2 grains.
If you are looking for accuracy, drop all charges by 1 grain and work up .2 grains at a time.
Master Po's Ancient M1 load secret
This is my personal M1 load I use in my CMP M1. It will shoot better than Master Po can. I worked this load up, as you should for your own rifle.
Remington .30/06 cases, flash holes deburred and weighed within 1 grain.
Federal GM210M Primers (Master Po has heard the horror stories of Federal match primers in the M1/M1A rifles. If you're squeamish or new to reloading, use Winchester Large Rifle)
47.0 grains IMR 4064
Sierra 175 grain MatchKing
Overall length 3.340 inches
This load, in my M1, duplicates almost perfectly the M72 match load specification with a very low standard deviation. Groups off the bench run 1 - 1.5 inches with the original 1945 barrel on the rifle. Of course, Grasshopper YMMV.

The Sierra Gameking 165 gr bullet shoots well out of my garands with 4064 (and bolt guns, too)

4064 works better in my garands for all different bullets.  Much more accurate.  It's all I use unless I find the pulled 4895 for sale.  Buying new, 4895 and 4064 are same price.
