I have shot a bunch of Privi the past several months, and I am now beginning to reload .223. The past couple of days while prepping brass, I have had some Privi that will not decap, pushing the decapper up through the decapping clamp even though the clamp is tight. I am using Lee Deluxe Rifle Die Set. The cases and decapper are adequately lubed, so I don't believe this is a problem. I realize Privi uses a seal on their primers, but so do other manufacturers, and most of the Privi runs through the decapper fine. Does anyone else reload Privi cases, and have similar problems? Any ideas on a solution other than not reloading these cases?

This subject came up not too long ago.

I've yet to try my Lee FL die for decapping Privi, but have used a Lee universal decapping die w/o any problem at all.

Lee also sells (cheaper yet) a base & pin set to be used with your hammer.

Oh yes, might want to check to see if it is Boxer primed.

Berdan primed rather. See what the flash hole looks like in the case. You may need a flashlight for that. Also, if it is boxer primed the flash hole may be on the small side. You may need to take a decapping pin and turn it down some.

Problem with the pin and hammer, the case will decap just fine, but now you have the pin stuck in the small diameter flashole.

It's a struggle to get out. You won't do it more than once.

I use the Lee universal decapper die, works just fine.

This is the second or third time this has come up with Privi brass lately.  I haven't had any problems yet with any of my 07' or 08' brass.  I am using RCBS small base resizer.  I have a Lee universal decapper, but haven't seen the need to bust it out yet.  If I recall correctly, the last guy to have this problem was using Lee dies also.  It may just be their decapping pin.  Next batch I work on, I will try my universal and see what happens.

Trouble de-capping?

2) With once fired military brass, this next step only has to be done once. De-cap the once fired military brass using either, a “universal” de-capper die or with a skinny nail/punch and anvil (with a hole in it, large enough for the old primer to fall out of, but still support the case rim).  Or, buy the LEE military primer de-capper set (#90102-.30 cal., #90103-.22 cal.).  Simply, run the nail/punch down through the case neck.  The nail will enter the flash hole and rest against the old primer.  Put the case on the anvil (old primer centered over the anvil’s hole).  Then, with a hammer knock out the old primer, letting the old primer fall through the hole in the anvil. Yes, the military crimp is sometimes that stubborn.

Yep, just finished about 300 prvi marked 08 with a LUD.  Knocks em out like no ones business.

Edit- I believe its a combination of the crimp and sealant that makes these things such a bear to remove.  Also, it seems  they have "normal" sized flash holes, not small.

I asked this question a few pages back.  The pin and collet that come with Lee pacesetter FL dies just doesnt do the trick.  Now I just decap first, tumble, then size.

On my progressive, I found some "noticably harder to decap" primers in some Prvi; I also had my Lee Universal deprimer get pushed up by this stuff.  The second time it worked fine, if still a little hard.  Maybe it's just that some of these rounds were crimped harder...  Either way, isn't it great that this doesn't BREAK those Lee dies!

I had the same problem with the decapper hanging up.  And unless I got some other make of "empties" mixed in with my PRVI cases, this is what I found.

Look at the headstamp on the problem cases.  Most PRVI cases are stamped PPU and the year on the top.  The cases I had problems with were stamped IK and the year on the top edge.
