Beside my main press I have a small RCBS Partner press that I bought to do small jobs and pistol reloads. Anyway I was resizing some brass this afternoon and this piece of brass comes out mangled at the bottom of the case. I look at the press and the shell holder is not fully centered in the holder in the ram (.45LC brass with some play in the top so it looks like it was lining up enough to get into the die but quickly ran out of play further down the case and trashed it pretty badly). I go to re-seat the shell holder into the ram and it will not go in enough to center under the die. There is really nothing there but the shell holder, the milled out top section of the ram, and a little  half circle wire spring that places tension on the shell holder. I ended up using an allen wrench and pulling the spring out of its grove and then forcing the shell holder into the ram and then reattaching the spring. I think that I will have to remove the spring to change it in the future. Anyone seen/heard of this problem. Do you all think that the spring is busted?

Sometimes the clip takes a lot of force to snap in a shellholder,, you might take a little off the clip that sticks through the ram,,but not too much.

Or....the shell holder may be out of spec.  It could happen.

How do "other" shell holders fit?

Do some measurements where the groove hits the clip.

Or, try another brand.   But, before doing that........IF it is out of spec., I can imagine that RCBS will be willing to stand behind their product.

If others fit fine, you should be able to figure out what’s different with this shell holder.

Incidentally, some folks replace that spring with a O-ring anyway so the shell holder can float.

Check if there is some crap in the groove in the ram that's preventing the shell holder from going all the way in.
Sometimes tumbling media, dirt or other debris finds it's way into the groove in the ram as well as into the shell holder itself.
I use a straightened paperclip and brake cleaner to clean out my press ram and shell holders.

Thanks guys. I am not sure on the holder being out of spec. It is new. I got it an week and a half ago but has load 350 rounds of 45LC in the time. I will check the ram verses another holder.
-the o-ring is a good idea. As is looking at cleaning everything up really good.

I have RCBS shell holders with enough dimensional difference that I have to hunt for one that will fit sometimes, particularly on my priming tool.
