Brass question... > Reloading

Hey guys

I currently have the following laying around

Lake City Match brass
Remington Brass
Winchester Brass
Federal Brass

Which, out of those 4, would you prefer to use in match loads?

Any but the Federal.

Winchester, LC, Remington, if you pin me down.

Winchester first, only because no crimp to remove.

if FC head stamp I'd scrap it.

As for the others I'd make a bunch of test loads with all of them, shoot them, then use the brass which had the most accurate loads

Why is the FC no good?

I pickd up over 100 of them at the range last week. I might just have to add them to the scrap bucket.

FC no good Grasshopper......thin primer webs....many posts on FC brass, even cutaway pics of the cases for comparison.

no FC no way, no how, brown cow...

I'd go WC, LC, RP.

However I reload LC exclusively..

If you were serious about the "match" thing, you'll sort by maker THEN by weight.

Can you at least use the FC once and then throw them out?? Seems a shame to throw all that brass out and not use it.

What's the deal with FC, a local supplier has 9mm FC cases for $30 per 1K they are once fired and nickel plated I thought that would be be a good deal but now am second guessing that on the bad info

I may be mistaken, but from what I had read about the FC brass the pistol brass is ok. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Pistol brass is fine, it's the rifle brass that has thin webs.
We are also taking about 20,000 PSI difference in pressure.

For the OP, LC brass would be my first choice, then the Win.

I agree with the LC brass...but make sure it is the same year on the head stamp...then weigh them...:-) Opps just reread the post...LC "match" brass...a no brainer...

Real "match" brass...Lapua. Buy a box....

Read the thread at the top of the page. Lots of good info up there.

If you start a FC thread, it will get locked.

FC gold match, same as the rest of FC.

Brass is soft, primer pockets are loose after first firing.

Then you want to load, not a good idea.

Recycle these cases.

I used to be skeptical about everyone slamming FC rifle brass, so I've been reloading them. The first reloads went OK, but the after the second or third reload, just as they've said above, the primer pocket gets so loose that new primers slide in with no pressure.

You can usually get 1 or 2 reloads out of FC, but don't expect anything more. There is much better brass out there.

To answer the question, I like Rem, then LC, then Win.

While sorting the FC cases that I picked up. I noticed that they have a crimp in them. I am going to cut one apart to look at the web. I will post pics when I get it done.

I've been wondering this myself. FC brass with a crimp, is it also crap?

Ihave reloaded FC brass that came in the valu-paks and the AE 55gr. Both had crimped primers. While reloading I thought the brass seemed softer. I also cut up a couple to verify the thin webs. I found that the webs were as thick or thicker than LC or Win. So I still believe that brass to be softer. Therefore I don't bother to reload FC, too much trouble for one or two reloads. Just my preference.

Do you have any pics of the cross sectioned FC case? A comparison pic would be GREAT! So it seems that the webbing issue is not the issue anymore. The only issue is that the brass is too soft and the primer pocket gets too loose?

Remington brass for accuracy loads here.

LC brass for everything else, (YMMV but I don't waste my time on any other brands of brass for MY AR15s).
