Hello Gang I started reloading 45 acp not to long ago and i am having problems ever since i started . The rounds are FTE. Factory ammo runs fine .. my loads are exaclty the same OAL as wichesters box ammo . I am loading 230 grain FMJ's. using winchester primers , Hodgon powder . I can shoot about 50 rounds and the casing starts to stick in the chamber .. but it drops out when the gun is tilted up. It runs fine after you clean the gun. But i like I said factory loads run fine upwards in the hundreds of rounds .. Just need some advice from the 1911 guru's or reloading guru to help me out . Its pretty frustrating when my rounds dont run. forgot to mention using dillion dies and loader (550) |

YEs the pistol cycles completey ..but of course it hangs becase of shell still chamber. I just drop the mag , pull back the slide and it falls out .. I was thinking extractor to but it does it to all of my 1911's and my XD The casings are cover with soot .. I am using the lowest grain amount to plink with I am using HS-6 (6.8 grains ) |
| Blow by of powder is gumming up the operation so to speak. Teh cases are not sealing off in the chamber, so the gun will not function. One has to work up loads that safe accurate and reliable in your guns! Plucking a load out of the air is a sure fire way to get frustrated.... |
|
So i guess what is happening is .. since the pressure isnt high enough the cases are not expanding to fit in the chamber .. well heck . didnt know what was going on . I figured that as long as I started off on what the manuel says i would be safe . Now I am excited to reload some more haha.. |
You are safe--you didn't mention any missing or damaged body parts. With knowledge and experience comes less frustration. You have gained a little of both--so you are better off. |
Starting loads are going to be safe (as in safety!) but I guess you mean safe as in good to go. Every gun is different, many guns might run fine on that load but there are plenty of variables. I would bet if you looked at the difference between your starting load in your book and the max load for that bullet and powder you would have to only come up 10 or 20% of the difference to get a load that functions fine. A firmer taper crimp might help also. (firmer crimp holds the bullet for a fraction longer and the powder burns better) |
| Stock 45 ACP's need to run at least 700 FPS with a 230gr FMJ to function. You can get a lighter weight recoil spring, or up the charge. I suggest you use HP-38 or similar speed powder for your target load. It will generate more pressure than your HS-6 at the same velocity and will burn cleaner for you. |
You can't count on that. The shape of the bullet can vary, which can provide greater bearing surface on the barrel, which increases pressure with a given powder charge. Also, differences in jacket material has the potential to do the same, albeit to a smaller degree. Always start low and work up loads. |
|
when starting out, work up a range of lows from min to max (or just under max). I have an example here www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=469 Then shoot all your loads starting with the lightest charges working your way up. Shoot each test batch at a different target. Settle on the one that cycles your gun reliably and is most accurate. Chances are it wont be the maximum load. Then produce massive quantities |

I prefer a 200 gr SWC and TiteGroup. i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg272/dryflash3/P1060042.jpg 45 Auto does indeed rock. Hey! What is the deal with that 7 at 8:30? (just kiddin The 200 swc is hard to beat. |
14 shot group, and an honest target. |
