Anyone doing this?

Can you suggest some manuf. shells?

Any tips?

I do it. Use about 4g of Red Dot, add small piece of styrofoam, add 15 #6 shot, another piece of styrofoam, then a 124g lead bullet on it. Shoot them out of a Colt .357 trooper. Try to keep a dozen or so around for snakes. Really works well.

CCI's shot capsules work great.  They are available in .357" diameter and they hold a whole lot of bird shot.  (They're also available in .44" diameters...)  It's been a long time but as I recall I used a fairly moderate load with them.

I load my own, but CCI makes them. The Speer reloading manual has data for loading them.

They're pretty ineffective past 3-5 yards. You can't get enough #9 shot into the capsules to get a nice, dense pattern. I've been meaning to call Ballistic Products and see if they have any #12 shot(used in .22 and .22 mag) because it works better IMO.

ETA-- If you're going to load your own, it's best to use cases that were previously loaded with wadcutters. You'll also want to use a flat faced wadcutter seating punch.

I have loaded the Speer capsules in 38 and 44 cal.

Just follow the instructions in a Speer reloading manual.

I use #9 shot and Unique powder in 38 cases.

Don't have any 44 special brass, so I use 44 Mag brass.

The Speer manuals states that there is no gain if you use the magnum case.

The capsule is seated to the magnum bullet length, so these are long rounds.

No leading or plastic fouling problems.

Effective range is about 15 feet. The rifled barrel kills patterns fast.

Ment as a snake load, will blow hell out of cans up close.

Can also throw a can in the air and watch it jump when hit. In a safe place of course.

i was talking to an old timer and he told me to charge a case with a few grains of powder, put in a .38 diameter piece of cardboard, some shot, and then another piece of cardboard and give it a roll crimp. Never tried it so I don't know how it works.

In the 4th Edition of Dean Grinnell's "ABCs of Reloading" he gave a similar method, including how he'd made cardstock wads, etc.  A 3/8" hole punch (tech data/TO size for those who've seen 'em) makes great .38 caliber wads.  But it's a pain in the butt to keep the shot from getting everywhere while you seat the top wad, so be VERY CAREFUL or you'll be cussing all the way to the shop vac.

I'd go with a powder load appropriate for the shot weight I was using (which means some experimentation with how much shot fits in the case), rather than just playing with how much powder you put in it.
