I was working on the screw replacement (in addition to installing the cocking tube buffer and push pins ) and all was going well until I got to the 3 little screws that secure the bolt jacket...I torqued down a bit too hard on one of the replacement screws and stripped the threads. The good news (if there is any) is it appears that I stripped the threads on the replacement screw and not the bolt since I was able to back the screw out and the reinstall the factory bolt jacket screws (using Blue Loctite). I did order a second set of replacement screws but my questions is...should I attempt to replace the factory bolt jacket screws again now or wait / check them periodically / replace them if I notice they're coming loose? Also, if the concern with cracked bolt jacket covers is linked to the 3 bolt jacket screws working loose, why not use Red Loctite?
do you have a GSG5 or GSG522? b/c for my GSG522, the three screws for the jacket were thicker than any screws i had in the kit. i would say those three new bolt jacket screws should be fine with blue loctite. mine were pretty well tightened. i wouldn't use red, b/c i've used red on a my AR's for the gas blocks and they are hard to get off. you have to use a torch remove it. something i don't think you'd want to do on the GSG if you were going to frequently maintain it.
Thanks kaotic504, I have the GSG522 SD. I also noticed the newer stock screws are a bit longer (compared to the replacement screws) and torx head as well. As I mentioned, I reinstalled the stock screws with some Blue Loctite and figured I would just check them every few hundred rounds. I ordered a second screw replacement kit to have extras on hand just in case of another mishap. Quick follow up question...do foks recommend using Blue Loctite on the other screws (receiver and trigger assembly) as well or just the 3 bolt jacket screws?
You're correct to recommend using Loctite on all the screws / nuts. I shot the rifle (350 rounds withonly 1 FTF) for the first time since replacing the screws earlier today. After finishing, I noticed that one of the bolt nuts had worked its way loose and was rattling around inside the receiver.
