Had a real head-scratcher with a recent Emerson Knives purchase that I just wanted to put out there.
I had some training at work recently with some Emerson folders with the Wave feature. I've heard of these knives but I never got to play with one before and I liked the Wave a lot. Told myself when I got home I'd buy one. So I placed an order on their website for a Mini-Commander plain edge and I paid $25 extra to have the scales tapped and drilled for left-handed carry. I got my knife in the mail yesterday and the scales were never drilled, clip was on the right side and the blade had serrations ($5 upcharge if you order from their site). Was like WTF did they even look at my order before they tossed this knife in the box?
I know mistakes happen but... wow. Obviously mailing it back on Monday for a refund and in the meantime gonna place a second order just to get my damn knife already. Was a nice looking knife tho, blade was nice and centered and the scales were real grippy!

| I will say, I enjoy their knives but if you really work a knife, youll end up breaking it or getting a lot of slop. I have a CQC15 that I bought mid 2000s and broke the tip off of it back about .25", snapped a mini commander and had a full size commander that gained a lot of blade play after about a year. I do love their blades and grips but wish they had the strength of a Strider. |

I like Emersons and own a bunch but honestly newer designs and materials have somewhat eclipsed them for "hard use". The Emerson designs made by ZT are terrific if you want an Emerson design but with better materials.
The lock was really stuck after that and I had to jam a towel in there to help pop it out. I ended up feeling the Mini Commander was a little on the small side so for the second knife I went for the regular Commander. Emerson is making good by upgrading my shipping on the second knife to Next-Day Air. I didn't even ask them to do that. The Commander will be replacing a Spyderco Paramilitary I carried daily for six years. |

Now, as much as I love Emerson, I will say the ZT collaborations are extremely stout and well executed. I have the ZT 0630 (Clip Point) which is reminiscent of Emerson's CQC8 model to a degree, I added custom scales and simply love it. ROCK6 |

I'll check those out. Was messing with the Wave feature on the Mini Commander I mailed back and maybe I was flipping it open too hard or something but I got the liner lock to lockup at like 90%

Emersons are pretty crudely made, which is inexplicably a selling point to some people. The ZT version is what you want. They might have been decent 10 or 15 years ago, but for the $, a much better made folder can be had for the same price or less. |

I never really understood the Emerson love in the current market. They might have been decent 10 or 15 years ago, but for the $, a much better made folder can be had for the same price or less. Quoted:

Always wanted an Emerson just because the are legendary even if they are crudely assembled.
Would really prefer ZT do a version of the Super 8. The 630 is nice, but I like bigger knives. Not sure if it's the edge geometry or the liner locks or what, but Ed's Manifesto reports several failures with the Emerson knives in the Organic Mediums testing |
