Can anyone recommend an axe for general around the house? We recently moved into a house with a fireplace and lots of trees. I need an axe to split some firewood and to chop some of the limbs and branches that fall from time to time and get burned in the backyard fire pit. I went to Home Depot but none of their stuff had good reviews. I don't want to pay a ton but I really have no idea what to expect to pay.

If you are splitting cut wood, I can't recommend the Fiskars splitting axe highly enough.

If you are chopping, get a chainsaw.

I like my Estwing Fireside friend for splitting kindling.

I use a maul for splitting rounds.

Just upgraded to one of these for around the campsite. Very happy so far!

Chopping down axe is a stihl chainsaw.
Splitting axe is a 10lb splitting maul or a 12ton log splitter. I prefer the maul for therapeutic reasons.

I posted in the Bushcraft pack axe thread.   Batmanacw is really knowledgable on the subject.  I just started collecting hatchets and axes.   I am getting ready to put a new handle on a nice two bit Plumb axe I picked up at a garage sale.
