I picked up a Kershaw Leek the other day (well, the nice mailman actually delivered it to me) and it has this "safety" thingamajig on the back end of the handle.  It slides to block the tip from opening.

This Leek is assisted opening.  I've also got a ZT 566 that's assisted, but no safety.

What's the hive's opinion of these safeties?  I really don't see the Leek opening by itself in my pocket but CAN see many cases where the safety gets in the way.  Do you keep your safety?  Leave it off safe?  Remove it from the knife?

If you live in a place that doesn't allow switchblades or one hand open you could use the lock as a way to say that it isn't one. I have one and I tightened the screw in the open position

i can't say i ever use it myself.  i guess i could see setting the safety if i was going to put the knife in a bag for transportation, but other than that, i don't have much use for it.

It's like putting a safety on a Glock........ Pointless.

Move it to the inactive position and cinch the screw down.

It is there largely for the lawyers.

Thanks, folks, pretty much what I thought.  Think I'll just torque it down for now as opposed to removing it.

I took the safety off my leek the first day I had it, and it's never caused me any issue.  I carry tip up right side at the back of the pocket though so the blade is normally tight against the edge of the pocket.

I'm waiting for someone to make an Emerson Wave knife with a safety. For the safety freaks

I've been carrying a knife since I was 14. I've never had one open in my pocket. That must take a special kind of stupid for it to happen.

The leek is an assisted open with a fairly weak detent.  If there was a knife to ever open in someones pocket, it would be this one.  For the record though, as stated above i've not had a lock on mine since the day I got it.
