Ok I was looking at the ESEE 5 and the Ontario Rat 5 they look pretty much the same and started out as the same product before the split. Is the ESEE made that much better to be double the price of the RAT 5  or is it a name brand thing.

ESEE has a better heat treat, better warranty, and better fit and finish. They are worth the additional cost IMO.

Rowen made Rats and Esee knives are much higher quality than Ontario made versions with the same name.

I have and ESEE3 and several Ontario RAT and DPX series knives. They are all great, but as already stated the ESEE does have advantages. Whether or not those advancements are worth the extra money is up to you. The ESEE is a tank of a knife but my DPx HEST is one of my favorite overall knives ever.

Just purchased an ESEE-4; very impressed with the heft of the blade and how nicely it handles.

The nod goes to the Rowan rats and Esse's but the Ontario's aren't bad knives and they have there act together as well as far as heat treat goes.
I have both but I have to say the ESEE knives are starting to push the price points a bit for a off the shelf 1095 knife.
Can't argue about the guarantee though you have to love a no questions asked lifetime guarantee

I'd suggest looking at swamp rat and scrapyard knives before making a decision. SR has a similar price point to ESEE and their knives are absolutely amazing. Scrapyard is owned by the same person and has lower priced knives with very high end quality
