I have been wanting to make some tomahawks but I havn't gotten into forging yet and I was having trouble finding steel. Well I finally found some. 1/4" thick 1075. I drew this design up a while back and it's constantly changing and being updated. I plan on making myself one in the next month. I am going to test it out and record video and take photos. If I think its GTG I plan on making another 3 to start with and then after that who knows.

I wanted a small Hawk that could be carried easily and is not to cumbersome. Something that can be quickly deployed and that is not to heavy. It is around 12" tall. The cutting edge is 3", spike around 1 3/4" long. The edge will have a flat grind or a convex or a combo of the two. Under the main edge and on the spike will not be sharp only beveled.

The sheath is still an idea, but if it works out, it will be kydex. You drop it in from the top then hook the bungee cord in the notch to hold it in place. When you need to deploy you reach down push the cord out of the notch and with your index finger under the edge portion pull upwards. I hope it works out as planned but if not I will figure something out.

The holes where added to lighten the hawk up and they will also be drilled under the handle. I'm still not sure if I will put them on the head because I don't want to do anything to weaken the integrity of the head.

UPDATE

I got the first Hawk profiled, and for the most part, ground out today. I really liked how it turned out. It's really hard to grind on the underside of the hawk with the grinder I have (Grizzly 2x72) but I'm learning. I am going to drill some holes in the handle to give it a little more weight at the end, but it feels really good right now. I will be mailing off for heat treat soon and then getting the handles on it. Then comes the testing. Stay tuned.

Thanks for looking.

WoW! Very nice.

Will you be selling these?

Yes. I will make one for me to test and then I will be making about three more to sell. I'm pretty confident that the design will work well for waht its meant to be.

Nice looking design    Instead of the lightening holes in the head. Go with a more traditional touch and do a hunters moon or weeping heart cutout.

Important areas to pay attention to....

- Clean up sharp edges on the metal. This will help prevent injuries to user.

- Radius the corners where stresses occur. Handle to head 'join' areas especially. It will not break off as likely in these areas.

Interesting design.

Are you flame hardening the edges and bringing the rest to a lower state or the hardening the whole thing?

On the sheath, may I suggest that the bungee loop from the top and hook somewhere in the same location ...just a loop attached from the top center with a bead, webbing tab, or something. Then it will be easier to deploy and reholster. Matter of fact...hmmmm... do this.....

Eh... OP is obviously not going traditional with this.

I want to strike a good balance of speed and weight so there may not be holes in it at all. I will be making the prototype withen the next couple of weeks. I will post pics of the testing process and maybe some pics during the making of.

I have a batch of knives i will be sending to the heat treat this week and it is going with them. It's taken longer than expected but i have about 25 knives and the Hawk that are almost complete. I have been working on them in my free time the last few weeks. Off to HT this week and I expect them back in 1-2 weeks. Then another 1-2 weeks for me to complete everything. I will update when I have something new.

I do have a few small knives that are complete and I will post on here soon.
