I'm trying to add a good hawk to my bag for camping/hiking/SHTF and really like the RMJ hawks.  However, the price on them is a major holdback as I just won't use it enough to justify that much money.   Can anyone suggest a solid one piece hawk around the same size as the Shrike or Talon?  I want something at least 15 inches long and has the spike on the back.  All suggestions welcome!

From what I have seen one piece hawks will be pricey.  If you can stomach not having a one piece, look into cold steel.  Maybe re-handle it like one of the vector hawks.  People like cold steel hawks a lot.  It will cost you a lot less most likely.

Maybe check into the Benchmade Killian. Its not as much $ as a RMJ, nor as light or sharp, but it seems very very solid and tough.  http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BM172BK

I got the Benchmade Killian for around $200. I'm really happy with it...it's built like a tank.

Buy an inexpensive Estwing Cartenter's Hatchet.  If you can't stand it, grind the hammer head into a spike.

I like the way you think.  I've two cheap Cabela's hawks that just wrap around the back of the handle.
My favorite is a small handforged hawk I purchased at a Rendezvous for 35 bucks.  Has makers mark stamped on head.  It looks almost like Cold Steel Riflemans Hawk.  I used to like spiked hawks but now prefer riflemans hawk because it makes a good hammer for steaks and looks like an old old carpenters hawk.
I'm thinking of making a kydex sheath that clamshells over the hawk from the top and hangs from belt.  Just need to figure out how to laminate leather over the outside of the kydex.

May consider adding something like their langets on Cold Steel's War Hammer.

Smith and wesson, sog, cold steel, united m48 and condor tool and knife are on the low end.

RMJ is the only high end one that I would buy if I only had the 400.00 dollar price tag

Emerson CQCT.  I don't personally have one, but I trust Emerson with my life, as they are my EDC knives here in Iraq.

I would just get a wood handled tomahawk. It would be very unlikely to break in that short of a handle.  Also, it will balance more naturally with a wooden handle.  You can find simple handmade ones from $50-150, or under $40 for a factory made one.   I would also get a longer handle in the 18-20" range.  You can't make a longer handle out of a shorter one, but you can always choke up on a longer one. Later you can probably get it rehandled with a vector composite handle.

Get yourself a Gransfors Bruks or Wetterlings camp axe and be done with it...

Gerber camp axes with a folding Sven saw are what I carried for 3 weeks on the appalachian trail. I wrapped the handle with reflective 550 cord for easy finding in the dark.   Worked good held a good edge fwiw

Lots of people in the bushcraft community rave about the Cold Steel Trail Hawk and they are cheap.

I don't want to post the pictures as they are the knifemakers and not mine.  There's the link to the thread, it's a custom but from the looks/sounds of it, it'll be a very usable hawk style head.

The SOG Tomahawk is on sale at LA Police Gear right now for $39.99. http://www.lapolicegear.com/sogtatohahan.html

Actually, it's the reason I came to this part of the forum. I'm looking into reviews.

What do you want to use the hawk for?

The bolt on head limits it's use for some applications...

I've got their Sportsman's Axe (which is really just a hatchet).  Fine piece of work.  About $40 or less.

I have used a trailhawk for about 4 years now.. I just bought a pipe hawk this year and really like it for camp chores.. It has a little more cutting surface and only weighs a few ounces more..The pipe pole work pretty good as a hammer too If its primary roll it a lite camp ax then buy a Riflemans hawk.. One of the best thing about the Cold Steel line of Hawks is they are very inexpensive and very fun to modify.. You should drop by The Blade Forum.com and check out the tomahawk section

I really like all the suggestions!  I want a one piece solid hawk but can't seem to justify $200+ for the limited use it will see.  The Cold Steel hawks look nice.  How exactly are the hawk heads attached to the wood handles?

If you get a Cold steel hawk I suggest, taking a dremel tool to the eye. De-burr it top and bottom. Then it's just pressure fit it to the haft.. If you want to you can reinstall the set screw. This will give you a very solid fit.

Those were the specialty ones made of ar400 plate. I got one of those as well (my pic too!) We cut everything with them including cinder block. A quick swipe or 2 with a file and we were back in business. I don't know why these aren't well advertised.
