Long-time lurker, here - hoping you guys can give me some advice...

I've owned my SOG Flash II (with machined aluminum handle) for a little over 5 years now.  It was my EDC until I bought a CRKT M16-14SFG earlier this year.  I've maintained it regularly - it's sharp, oiled, and still fires as quick as I remember it.

But, I've noticed quite a bit of lateral play in the blade when it locks up; the blade can shift nearly 5 mm (at the tip) when it's open.

My question, then, is two-fold: first, does anyone else notice this problem in their Flash II (or, alternatively, am I just neglecting to realize that it never locked up tight); and second, is this something that can be remedied on my own, or should I ship it to SOG (and would that even make a difference)?

Thanks, guys!

Yeah blade  play has been noted in sogs as far as i know.  Id tell you just tighten it up.  I don't buy sog folders for that reason.

Yeah, they're definitely off my list.

I guess I'll see what I can do...

Thanks!

Good reason to buy the plastic model I guess. Mine have been rock solid, and there're easy to adjust. Not to mention they were only $40 at Lowes.

I have a topo meridian that I carried for a few years. The lock is very weak and the blade is loose. I haven't carried it in a long time due to the lock.

I emailed SOG to ask if an adjustment is under warranty; I'll post results here when I receive them.

Same thing happened to mine.  You get what you pay for.  I love my SOG multi tool, but when it comes to folders.... I buy elsewhere.

I have the plastic handled model as well. The blade is still as tight as when it was new, but if you need to it is easy to tighten.

I have never seen the metal handled model, is it not the same, with an allen screw at the pivot point?

I have the Plastc handle and it is very solid and very fast.  The PX has the Tiger Stripe for 55 bucks so I'll proably get another. They put the blade of the Flash with the locking system of the Trident, a real winner.

If you have any lowes stores in your area, they had the plain Flash II on closeout awhile back for $40.

That's where I get mine, unfortunately they are the stupid 50/50 blades instead of smooth.

The pivot screw is still keyed for an allen wrench, but the aluminum handle is rigid and doesn't compress very much (or really at all) when the pivot screw is tightened.  The pivot screw is as tight as possible the shift is still present.

I did receive an email from the SOG Warranty department.

They gave me a few solutions to try; first to make sure the piston lock was clean and free from debris, and second to tighten the pivot screw.  Short of that there isn't much I could do as a user.  They mentioned that I could ship it to their warranty department and they might be able to adjust it in-house; I'm planning on doing that this week.

I just wanted to post an update to conclude this thread.

I received my Flash II from the man in the Brown Truck today.

I opened the box to find my knife and a few stickers SOG had thrown in.  Their warranty department replaced the pivot screw and cleaned up / oiled the assisted opening mechanism.  They successfully eliminated the blade play - it locks up tighter than I ever remember it doing so.

I'm quite satisfied with their warranty service; while it wasn't as prompt as I might have liked, it was certainly thorough and the results were positive.

Thanks for the follow-up.

I've been wanting to get a Flash II for a bit now, and your post on the warranty issue being a positive experience means I will get one for sure now.  Not as a main EDC, but just as something else to have in the collection and to be a filler for my next Amazon.com purchase.

I use it as an EDC with slacks as it sits deep and is nearly impossible to see with dark slacks.

I've had an SOG 2 polymer handled folder for a while now. It's the black model with the partially serrated blade. It's a tight now as when I bought it. I also have a couple of discontinued Benchmade folders that in comparison have gotten lose. Overall, I prefer the SOG Flash to my Benchmades.

I used a SOG Flash II every day since high school (2 years ago), then 4 months ago, got a Trident Tanto... Both are tight as can be.

I will, however, suggest that you maybe put plastic washers between the blade and the sides. I imagine that'd help a lot in tightening since that'll compress, unlike the aluminum.

I had a flash 1 and remember it had horrible blade play

I think the counter guy at Dicks is getting tired of showing me the display model everytime I go in. One of these days I am going to shock the hell out of him and buy one
