Hey guys, so I got the Benchmade "new products" email yesterday and I am now enthralled by the 583 Tanto Barrage w/assist.  I've carried an old 722 Pardue for years and it's just about worn out but I haven't been able to find a Benchie Tanto profile I liked till seeing this one.  I have zero experience w/their assisted openers though, any good data on these (or any assisted benchie?)

Many of their AFO line are .mil issue and we pretty much beat hell out of 'em day in, day out.

I like mine...it's seen >1 yr in Iraq and nearly 6 in 'stan.

Outstanding, that's what I like to hear.  You haven't had any spring or grit issues then?  Like I said, I love the AXIS lockup, I have one on a blade I've carried and used for a long time and it is rock solid.

This is the one I'm looking at in particular, btw:  583 Barrage Tanto Assisted

I have the 583-1, the WARN version with G-10 handles and orange backspacer.

They are damn good knives and you will not find a better assisted opening knife from any company.

May i suggest the newest barrage the 581 with upgraded M390 steel?

That's an interesting option too!  I'm happy to hear that their assist is a quality product, although I've handled several assisted open knives I've never owned one and I was sorta worried about the 'jump' of the spring load.  Guess it's just another training issue!  The one thing that's ticking me off are the grip material choice... I'd much rather have had G10, do you know anything about this Valox?

My auto Presidio is going on 3 or 4 years. Still fires as hard as ever. Gets opened several times a day. Don't know if that helps but I assume the assisted openers are gtg.

I am not a real fan of the benchmade autos for just aesthetic reasons, but they can take mad abuse.  My buddy fell down a hill at NTC and lost his leatherman, but found a benchmade auto when he stopped rolling.  He took that with him to Iraq for the next deployment.  Based on it's condition when he found it I think had already been to the sandbox before.  If it can take a deployment, sit in NTC dirt for god knows how long and then take another deployment without any problems I'd say it's gtg.

Mine continues to amaze me.

Consider me simple, or at least simply amused, but sometimes I open it just to watch it open.  Yea, I know.

I actually use a little TW-25b on mine and have had no grit accumulation problems.

Benchmade manual and assisted knives are nice, except for their OTF models.   If you want to compare another top tier assisted opener, take a look at the Zero Tolerance line of assisted opening pocket knifes.  They are built like tanks and come with a lifetime warranty as well.

Lol, nothing wrong with my Infidel, it works just as well as my Microtechs and was half the price of a scarab.

So I got a chance to handle a 580 today at an REI (Christ, I hate that f'ning store, hippies with more money than they know what to do with... but I digress) and I really like the action and lockup.  The material for the handle is horrible though, I really wish they would have made it with a nice thin g10 scales.
