First off, I'm a n00b when it comes to knives. My edged weapon training ended with the bayonet stuff in boot camp. More training is on the menu. Anyways...
I want to conceal carry a fixed blade knife for self defense purposes. I work at a hospital and wear scrubs which don't require a belt(or even have belt loops for that matter). I'd rather simply carry my CCW weapon in a belly band but this hospital is pro-criminal and doesn't allow CCW. So that's not an option. I'm looking at the Becker Necker and the IZULA neck knife. Both seem to be good quality for the price. I'm skeptical of the neck knife concept though. Is this just a novelty in the blade world or do folks carry these daily? Should I forget about carrying a fixed blade and opt instead for a folder? Keep in mind this is for self-defense only. Also I have no fantasies about being Jim Bowie I'd just like to have more tools at my disposal if the need arises. |

The concept is sound. They can be fast to deploy but a bit of a pain to resheath. I find long thin knives and associated sheaths to be more comfortable when hiding under a shirt. I like my Barry Dawson Spike (not the cold steel version, and actual Dawson) the best out of the 5 that I have. I was more concerned about keeping one hidden behind a tie when I first carried them. I have also worn them around the waist and hanging along my right leg while wearing shorts. I am not limited in my attire anymore so I do not carry daily now. It is not my favorite carry method but it has it's place. A folder is going to have to be a pretty light piece and should be thin if you are having to carry IWB. I have been using the hell out of my Spyderco Enduras in ZDP189. I can't get over how well it cuts. It weighs about half as much as my beloved benchmade 710. |

i'm, normally, not a big fan of neck knives for concealed carry because i feel there are much better options. however, given your particular circumstances, i'd say you've got the right idea.
a good friend of mine is marrying my little sister (in law). he bought her a pink Izula and i made a pink neck sheath for her. now, her older sister (my wife) is getting the exact same set up. i think neck knives are good for open carry by females because (around the house) they're more likely to throw the knife around their neck in the morning than find some pants with pockets, change out of PJ's, etc. but, agian, your situation (no belt and scrubs style top) changes everything. i would definately consider neckin' it one of your best options. just be careful re-sheathing, might wanna practice around the house a few times. btw - i got a chance to fondle the Izula, it's worth what they cost. cool little knife backed by serious warranty :) |
