I am looking to pick up a solid multitool. Looking at the sog EOD in black oxide. I've heard sog is at the top of the multitool heap.
What do you guys think is the best multitool? I want something that will hold up to a little abuse. Pliers that won't break under regular use, and wirecutters that don't indent with little use. |
| if you want pliers that cut wire how about something from channel lock for $15-$20, Im not really a fan of multitools anymore since a jack of all trades is a master of none. I do however have a leatherman supertool and keep it in my small EDC bag, but rarley ever use it. |
| I just got a SOG Power Assist, I'd recommend against that particular model. The accessory tools are seriously lacking. I picked it up Monday and I'm already planning on replacing several, plus only one side of the handle carries tools. Now, the other SOGs might be different, but this one didn't impress me |

Sog made it clear to me that only one side of the tool is usable for accessories while the other is taken up by the blades/mech I havnt fondled a powerassist but may tonight. It seems like the ideal tool for me. I'd just like to hear your opinions why it lacks since you have one yourself. Thanks! |

File/large flathead - good. What else are you going to do with the end of a file?
Another flathead/bottle opener - good, again there's not much else to do with the end of this so I guess a screwdriver head is ok Phillips/some kind of notch towards base - good. I don't know what else this is since there's no supporting documentation and it's not mentioned on their website. Maybe it's just the way they shape their tools Another flathead with the same notch as the phillips - really? This is nothing more than a flat head screwdriver. So far 3 flathead screwdrivers out of 6 available tools? Can opener/small flathead screwdriver - can opener is good. I'm surprised at how often someone forgets a can opener at work. But we're up to 4 flatheads now V-Cutter - at least this doesn't have a screwdriver on it anywhere. I haven't used this yet, but it looks pretty handy. This catches on the can opener every time, at first I thought they were supposed to be used together somehow, but they just stick and have to be lightly pried apart. I'd trade 2 of those screwdrivers for scissors, 1/4" drive, wire stripper or even an awl. And looking at it, I think the notch on the Phillips or flathead #3 would work as a bottle opener, so tool #2 is kind of a waste if this is true. I don't have a bottle handy to test it right now, however. |

If you wear a double thickness belt (like the Dillon DL 1.5" for instance) you might want to replace the SOG pouch if you decide to go with that tool. It comes with a plastic clip that works fine on a normal type but not so well on a good heavy gun belt.
That's not really an issue to me, I'm so used to cell phone cases and other belt pouch type accessories not working on my carry belt that I didn't even think of it when I posted a couple of days ago. I just kind of tossed the thing aside an stuck the tool in a pouch with a loop instead of a clip. Personal preference and your own fashion, I guess. I suspect this clip is made of something stronger than the average cell phone case, but I'm not going to try to break it just to find out. What is this? My 3rd or 4th post bitching about the SOG? It's not that bad a tool, really. I don't regret the purchase and wouldn't send it back even if I hadn't spent a week fiddling with it. I plan to spend the extra money on personalizing it with the tools I want instead of all the flatheads. The pliers are great, the knives are fine (I haven't done much cutting yet), I'd say it's worth the money but I'll probably continue to carry my Leatherman Wave or that Gerber whatsit |

I have used them all and the Swisstool is the best made by far. Best fit on all the tools. No wobble or sticking of tools or pliers. The Powerassist of SOG is nice for cutting large gauge wire, but the tools on mine bound against each other terrible and all felt sloppy. I have broken the pliers on Gerbers twice, no more of them. Leathermans are a good second choice. I have used a Wave and Charge. I still have the Charge and it works great, but I definitely put the Swisstool in a higher class.
