If you live in a decent sized town there should be a couple of shops that do powder-coating.

carbon steel:  parkerize it.  Duracoat/GunKote after parkerizing if desired.

stainless steel:  very fine grit aluminum oxide blast.  If that's not matte enough, Duracoat/GunKote, or hit it with Caswell Plating's Stainless Blackener.  (the stainless blackener isn't a very durable finish, but as long as the blade was scuffed up thoroughly, it'll stay dark for a good long time)

factory GunKote on a Chris Reeve Mk VI

parkerized on a USAF Ontario brand survival knife.

home built from a kit.  154 Crucible stainless, al oxide blasted and treated with Stainless Blackener

eta:  if you have a stove, you can do the parkerizing very easily with about $20 worth of ingredients.  If you have an oven, you can cure Gunkote very easily––rattle can from Brownells for about $20.  If you can afford a $10 airbrush and a can or 2 of compressed air, you can apply the Duracoat.  Again, about $20 worth of paint.

Seriously––-paying somebody else to refinish something as small as a knife is throwing away good money.  With a little research, it's easy to do, and it doesn't cost much at all to set up.  (a compressor and blasting gun is the only real expense.....but any shop would do this for you cheap)

Hell.....since it's not a firearm, no FFL required to receive or work on it......send it to me and I'll prep it for you if you'd like.

colt45guy: out of those coatings which would be the most durable on AUS8 steel?

the kit knife in this pic is AUS8.  I just went with a light 220 grit al oxide frosting to dull the shine.  It's still looking good, and it's my main woods/hunting/beat to hell knife.  Personally, I think Ceracoat, Duracoat or GunKote (after an abrasive blast) would be the best.  I prefer GunKote, but there's nothing wrong with any of the 'wonder paints' as long as it's prepped and cured properly.

colt45guy: i have a powder coat place right next door to my work....and i see that the most common coating is an epoxy powder coat...what should i ask them to do with my knife? and btw did you get your knives on knifekits.com?

I've never done poweder coating.....wouldn't feel comfortable giving advice about it.  If the shop does it for their business, I'm sure that they'll be able to tell you the best way to do it.

(and yes, KnifeKits.com is one of my favorite websites)
