What's the best way to do this? I lent my ranger knives renagade out to a friend and it looks like he was trying to cut up a rock...pretty much flattend out the blade in a few spots. what kind of tools do i need? I assume it's different than a knife.

I have home depot and ace hardware at my disposal as far as tools.

Thanks guys,

Tom

You lent your friend a $150 tomahawk?

Hope he's a real good friend.

I'd use a diamond stone to remove lots of metal as it sounds like the edge is truely fucked and is going to need to move back.

Finer stones to finish.

Remember, it's a tomahawk, not a razor. A steeper edge angle will hold up under your friend's 'use' longer.

I'd be asking(telling) my friend to pay the shipping cost to send it back to ranger for sharpening.

I don't know about high dollar stuff but for axes and hatchets around my place I find it easier to use a belt sander to shape the edge then move to stones if I want a real sharp edge

I do mine the same way I learned to sharpen an axe.  I use a mill bastard file to bring up a good edge.  You don't need to shave with then.

mill file definately.....And keep your friend away from it. Sounds like he doesn't know what the hell he is doing. He might get hurt with it next time. I grew up in the woods hauling an axe around with my chain saw. We took a mill file and sanded one side smoother than the other on the belt grinder and used that to finish the blade after filing. Don't use anything else unless you are in the field and don't have one. Belt sanders/grinders can mess up the temper and get you to lose a finger or something if you don't know exactly what you are doing. No need to have it flying around the shop. Hope this helps.
