Tell me about AUS8 SS...

I'm building a fixed blade kit (Delta 5 from Knife kits).  It's "heat treated to 57-59 rc".

Good, mediocre or crap?

Good question. Look in the Knife and Blade FAQ thread tacked above.

I had the same question, never got a definitive answer.  I figured for the price, I might as well just buy it.  I have the Modern Bowie 5" from Knifekits.com.  So far, it's my go-to knife for hunting and general cutting chores.  Seems to hold an edge well, although it's a bit difficult to put an edge on it at first.

I've never gotten it 'hair poppin' sharp, but it'll shave arm hair easily.  It hasn't rusted yet, and it got through a lot more deer meat than my Case folder did before it needed a touch up.

The answer really is in the Knife and Blade FAQ. Click on "Steel Types" and it takes you to a well written informational article by ARFCOM member and knife expert, Joe Talmadge.

I have found that knife steels are good or bad depending on what you want. I like AUS8 a lot and think it is a great balance between edge holding and sharpening. It has never disapointed me. I like SV30 on some things but do not want all m knives made out of it. The kit you are building has always interested me and am thinking on building one of them myself.

AUS8 is a good solid stainless. Tougher then ATS34 but does not hold as good of an edge. In real life use you could not tell a difference between them.

I guess I've been here long enough to know:  Checked tacked threads first.

Thanks for the info.
