My son's being deployed October.  Want to get him something special before he takes off.  Anybody have any input/experience with this knife?

agreed, a fixed blade if your son is able to carry one with his unit would be preferrable to a folder

Go fixed.  Something manageable.  Not a giant monster knife.  Extra weight sucks ass.

The feedback from troops deployed does not favor large knives as there is very little to chop on.

A 4" blade fixed or folding knife seems about the max necessary.

Avoid the strider. I have axes with a better edge geometry.

If it was me, and I was looking to purchase a decent knife for somebody in the 4" blade range, I would seriously look at the Grayman Suenami.  Good steel, 4.25" blade, this is on my short list of knives I plan to purchase for myself.  I would be really happy with the gift if someone gave me one!

I recently had the oppertunity to handle a few Grayman Knives at a training event a few weeks back.
First impression, Grayman knives are generally not pretty, but not sloppy either. Second was these are big- solid pieces of steel. Most of Grayman's Knives are big, then I found their Suenami at 3.75"x1.5"x1/4" blade, 8.5" overall, with a double bevel black Gun Kote finished blade and Micarta handles. At less than a hundred dollars than other hand made fixed blades I thought I would give them a try. I added textured grips or "Gator Grips" for an additional $15. A decently made Kydex lined molle sheath came with it. The knife came with a good working edge, but not razor sharp. Grayman's warranty: he'll resharpen it any time for life. I've done some minor cutting and general prying and have not been disappointed.

People don't buy them for a reason.

For that kind of money, you don't have to participate in a crapshoot.  Get something proven.

I bought a buddy of mine a Gerber multi=plier and a Gerber LMFII when he deployed.  He said the multi-tool was indespensable.

If you want "take it up a notch" in the knife department, you may want to look to Crusader Forge custom knives.  An Oberland 02 may be what you're looking for (plenty of usable blade belly, excellent steel, and ~5" cutting surface).  Full tang, g10 scales, .25" thick blades, and razor sharp.  Each knife is made by hand and triple tempered.  Maceij (the maker's name) will make a knife to your specs or you can choose from profiles on the website.  He will also expedite delivery of your knife since it's for a service member...meaning he'll move your son't knife to the front of a 3month long line so you can get yours in plenty of time.  Price is $360, but it is well worth it.

fwiw, Maciej is former military SF and has had extensive military experience...I'm betting he knows what kind of knife your son needs.
