I dont know about Heineken but I dont like the way the HALO resets. Having to manually pull the blade back in isnt nearly as nice as sliding the button and having it suck in on its own power. The re-cocking piece always seemed kind of a weak link to me. |
ya, i was about to ask how exactly that worked, i definutly dont like that... as for my desision, im still no closer, i jsut cant decide between thoughs 3 choices at all... im leaning closer to the combat troodon with the drop point..but then i start thinking about how the ultratech is 160 bucks cheaper...and then again i love the firant look...the red looks sharp |
|
The single action HALO knives do take both hands to reset, but they fire harder and lock up like a fixed blade. ANY double action OTF knife jumps off track easily and is much weaker. The double action OTFs are handier for everyday chores, while the single actions are far better as a weapon or serious tool. |

well, i said fuck it...you only live once, so i got the expensive one...at least my internet penis will be a lot bigger. i went with the clip point, i know tanto blades are tacticool but i think the clip point will function better for everyday use, and i like the better slicing ability... |

My roommate has a Fireant Makora. The grip tape on that thing has pretty much destroyed the pocket on every pair of pants he has. On the other hand, I have a Troodon S/E (07/06) and I have no such issues. (Yes, it's my EDC knife. I think covering the exterior surface of the clip with grip tape would improve the grip without tearing the hell out of your pants. |
Actually, i like that idea a lot...I think I might do it, I know there is some good grip tap out there that sticks great AND wont ruin the surface you stick it on...I guess you could cut it out in whatever shapes you wanted and make it look pretty bad ass as well...nice custon grip tape job...I think im gonna try it, ill post pics when i get it done. |
Guess you don't know much about Microtech knives then . I have been carrying my Ultrtech double action everyday since 2002. Never"jumped off track" or had any malfunction. I use and abuse this knife and its never failed me once. Maybe some cheap off brand may fail as you stated but not a Microtech. By they way I have owned two Halo's also |
Actually, I own Microtech autos and like them very much. The double action OTFs will indeed jump off track if something gets in the way of the blade when it fires, while the single action will simply punch through the obstacle. Until a year or so ago when Microtech redesigned their website, they had directions on how to reset the blade if it jumped off track. The single action HALOs are simply a more robust design. I guess you don't know as much about Microtech knives as you thought. |

sp thats what u ment about "jump off track"...i think the other guy (like myself) though you ment like actually jump off track like side to side, not stop if it hit an obstical... i knew they did that, when i borrowed my dads i could help mysef and purposly opened it with something in the way, i wanted to see what would happen..it stopped and was loose, i was like "oh shit" and i thought mabey i broke it...but i just pulled it out till it locked open, then it closed like normal... i dont mind they do this, like if it went off by accident im my pocket (which i know will never happen, cause you have to put a good amount of pressure on the swich for them to open)...in any case though, i would be a little nervious that if i accidently oppened a holo with my hand in front it would go all the way threw...where as a scarb might just give me a hell of a cut/punture wound... |
| Well you still don't make any sense. They are not "jumping off the track" but disengaging. Its a safty factor so if they would happen to come open in your pocket they will disengage not "jump off the ttrack" Don't have to worry about the Halo doing that as they are to big for a pocket carry. Nope don't know a thing about Microtechs, only carried one evry singlre day since 2002. |
Bigger does not make better. The change to a newer internal mechanics also doesn't necessarily make it better. I have never had issues with my Scarab. It works and works well. |
|
got it today... i love it, the shape is awsome and looks very cool.. glad i went the way i did...i still think scarabs are bad ass and i dont think there is anything wrong with them...i just perfer the comabt troodon over it...as far as funtion, i cant tell a difference in the way it fires cmpared to a scarab... |
|
I think you will be very happy with the combat trodon. Ive got a normal one that i love, and going to order a combat one as well. They just fit my hand so much nicer personally. I trided to get a scarab in last year but they gave me the run around and never sent it, was going for the serated side and regualr edge other side. Pat |
ya, i got it and i love it...only thing is the tip barily sticks out, i figure after a few sharponings that will be fixed though. |
| does your troodon lock up tight when it is deployed, mine moves just a bit, barily noticabel, not noticable when i cut with it...when i push from the top of the blade it does not move, when i push from bottom (cutting edge) it barily moves up jsut a litttle, does your do thisa? |
|
I think all of the double actions do that, it's normal. My question is, do the HALOs lock up tight enough where you could beat it up a little, such as doing some light chopping, or would that damage the internals a bit? I guess my question is, would a HALO make a good camping/hiking/SHTF knife? |
from what i have hgear the halo has the tightes tlockup of any microtech, i think it would be good for SHTF..not sure about beeting on it, someone else will have to answer that... |
I saw a guy at a gunshow drive an open HALO III through a piece of steel with a rubber mallet. |
Holy Shit |
Ive seen TONY M throw it several times in the parking lot at plywood Very strong I own a few but STill wouldnt be my FIRST PICK for protectin |
It is more likely the blade will just be stopped by an obstacle. The spring isn't really that strong, and will be stopped by anything more than a few sheets of paper. Once the blade is locked open, you can hammer it through whatever you want, but don't count on it firing through things.
They lock up very tight, but they are really too light for chopping, the blade is skinny. A mid-sized fixed blade is much better suited for camping/hiking/SHTF, although a HALO might be handy to have, also. |
