Well I used my brand new Tanto (GI not Recon, thank god) to open the soft seal on a bottle of 44/40 Instant Gun Blue.  I got a bit on the tip and it instantly blackened the shiny edge.  Thinking I couldn't have a dark blemish on a shiny edge, and a black edge is more 'tactical' I quickly blued the whole edge.  It looked cool!

Fast forward 24 hours and now the entire edge is 100% rusted!  Badly!  I can swipe the edge on a cloth and leave a significant rust streak without making the edge look any better.

I'll try steel wool to make it look better.  Any ideas what the heck I did wrong?  Any ideas on how to fix it?  Any ideas how to blacken the edge without this happening again?

Instant gun blueing is nasty stuff.  The stuff I'm familiar with has selenium in it and stinks like garlic, and when you use it, you MUST oil down the treated surface right away or it will rust like that.

Just sharpen it and you'll remove the rust.  And you probably will have to do that anyway to restore the edge anyway.

You need to oil it down ofter using cold blue, and then let it cure for 24hrs with the oil on it, then wipe it down and you will be GTG.
