I recently ordered a kit knife from knife kits and was interested to know if any one has tried them before.. I have built knives from scratch but never from a kit.. My plan is to rework there design a little to suit my liking. And of course it will be black when I am done..
Any recommendations on coloring the blade? Bluing or some sort of paint.. Feedback would be appreciated on some of your experiences would be helpful..

One of the bake on finishes should work great. Check out the refinishing forum.

Well I got the kit on Friday and had it together in about 15 minutes.. A couple hours detail work on the handle and that was it.. I have decided I will do a bead blast finish instead of paint. This was a lot easier than building piece by piece although I broke the factory lock and had to machine a new one.. I would post pics if anyone were interested.

This wasn't really a Kit, I ordered blanks out of Carbon Steel to my design and then figured on doing some detail work.

Top is a 7 inch fighter, middle is a 4 inch utility and bottom is a 5 inch utility/camp knife.

I soaked the blade of the middle knife in Cidar Vinegar over night.

So does the vinigar stain the blade or just etch it?

After a few dozen blades from a small patch knife to a broadsword I realized that I hate grinding blades. Here's the last blade I ground:

The blade ain't dirty, it's plywood steel The rest is walnut, brass, and turquoise.

Everything I make is from either a kit, bare blade, or, until the guy making them for me quit, custom blades. Texas Knifemaker's Supply has a few interesting fighter kits now.

For fun or money?

I would like to see pic's of your knife when you are finished. I'm orderering the ddr3-bl come pay day. It will be my first kit knife. The Delta 5 series looks good to me also. A Delta 5 drop point with baked on gun coating and homemade micarta scales would be a fun project.

Mostly fun, but occasionally I'd sell one when I needed a little cash.
