Hey guys... I'm looking for a new folder, but I'm kinda picky.

The blade needs to be at least 4 inches.

First, let me start by saying what I don't want.... it should make things easier.

I don't like the standard SOG Elite II; I don't like the profile of the spear point blade. It seems too dull to me. The new trident style blade is interesting, but I would like to see some reviews on it first. Any opinions on it?

Also, I am not interested in either a CRKT M16 or a Cold Steel Voyager. I have used both and would like a blade made of better quality.

ETA: Furthermore, Autos are not an option for me here in CA.

The Mission knives MPF1 looks intresting. Any opinions on it?

The Extrema Ratio MPC looks like it could be an option as well, but a bit pricey for my liking.

I'm sure someone is going to suggest a strider model. Don't know much about them. Pics and a opinion regarding them would help.

Any other suggestions? I would be glad to hear them.

Thanks!

I've got a DarkOps Stratofighter.  I've carried it on my duty rig and used it on pretty much a daily basis for about 6mos.  No complaints.   Picked it up at a gunshow for $200.

Benchmade 710.

It is THE perfect all around knife.  I tried to break the habit, I have tried other knives, but I keep coming back to it.

After slicing myself up with a linerlock and similar styled knives, I won't ever go back to using them.

The Spyderco Manix is one stout, heavy duty folder.  It was my top choice when I started  looking for a really good hard use folder for everything else that the Emerson couldn't do well.  The Manix will also hold it's own for self defense purposes.

Even though blade is slightly shorter than 4" I wouldn't let that stop you from checking it out.

IMHO, the Manix is one of the most underrated folders available.  It's blade is made with excellent steel(CPM-S30V) and uses an almost indestructible back lock.  It can easily hang with knives costing many times as much.

I second the benchmade 710. They made many variations including blades made from ATS-34, 154CM, D2, M2HS and handles made from G-10, brass and winewood, and aluminum and jigged bone. They even made a trainer. The axis lock is the best lock you can get on a knife, plus the 710 is made in the USA and has a real lifetime warranty. Here is a few that i have. The blades are right under the legal limit of most states at 3.9 inches.

Thanks for the advice. Nice looking blades. But the blades look a little thin. I was hoping for a blade that is a little more beefy. Sorry... like I stated in my original post... I'm picky.

How about a Protech Brend #1 with a 4.75 inch blade.

http://www.tadgear.com/edged%20tools/brend_auto_.htm

I know you said no CRKT M16 and I am not sure what steel the M-21-04 in but I just bought one and it is a big folder with the blade just short of 4 inches.

Sweet looking knife. Never seen it before. Unfortunately, here in CA, only Le and Mil can own autos.

Ah yes, the evil Warlords that run the PRK limit you to Auto's with less than a 2 inch blade so you would be looking at a  Protech Runt.

I guess this will make you hate the free world even more.....A few of my Protech Auto's and I even carry one

I also checked and the M21 uses the same AUS 8 SS as the M16.

Even the Chriss Reeve  Large Sebenza comes in under the 4.0 inch blade lenght at 3.67 but is supposed to be one hell of a folder.

Benchmade 710HS.  I'm still pissed at myself for losing my first generation 710SBT(black blade, half serrated).  But at least I now have an excuse to get one without the serrations, and with the D2 steel.
it is only 3.9" though, if that thenth of an inch makes a difference.
The TSEK Axis, or even better the AFCK Axis is a fantastic knife.  One of their older knives that has been updated with the Axis lock.  3.96".
The Skirmish is a fantastic knife with a 4.3" blade. And the Rukus with it's 4.25" blade both fit your size desire.

Spyderco also makes a few decent blades.  The Endura 2, with the stainless handles is nice. The Police model and the Military are both ok, but the tips are way too fragile, and I don't buy into their BS story about how they made it thin for better cutting.  A knife that is designed for police or military should be durable, not having fragility designed into them.

The blade is actually as thick or thicker than my spyderco military, buck 110, microtech UT-6 and halo II, mulitiple balisongs, and dalton jammer.

Your best bet is to go to a knife store and handle as many as you can. If you are looking for a prybar go buy a $10 claw hammer. If you are looking for a cutting tool find one that uses good steel and is comfortable to you.

If the 710 isn't durable enough for you, you need a fixed blade with a quarter inch blade, not a folder.  I've abused mine in three countries, and 4 states, from the swamps of Florida, to the desert of Eastern WA, to the Middle East, and it held up just fine.

Look at the Skirmish, or the Rukus then as they are even larger or "beefier."

Oh, the Gerber Applegate/Fairborn folder is a bit over 4 inches, but it's not the best steel.  Probably on par with CRKT but at a higher price because of the name.

I remember thinking the same thing when the 710 came out, "What's with the thin blade?".

I am glad that my misconceptions were proven wrong.

BUT, GG40, an EDC is a personal thing.  I wish you well in your quest.

I'm sorry. Perhaps I should have elaborated on the term "beefer".

I did not mean the blade stock had to be thicker. I just meant the profile of the blade seemed a little thin. I would like a wider blade. That is why I've chosen to pass up the spyderco Police. The profile is too thin, and as a poster notes above, the tip is prone to breaking.

The Rukus is a very interesting knife and looks to be about what I am loking for. I had seen it before but haven't heard any opinions on it.

Does any one out there own a Rukus and how do you like it?

My only concern with the Rukus is that I have pretty big hands and the handle looks like there is not much to hold on to.

I have the RUKUS, and it is HUGE compared to the 710.

I can't find the pic I had comparing the two.

It is nearly twice as thick, and pics on the net, or even reading the specs seem to do little in showing how big and heavy it is.  The s30v is awesome and the knife cuts like it is a powertool.  My only bitch about is the clip.  It sucks...seriously.  Why they put such a wimpy, lameass, no-retention, weak, POS on such an awesome knife, I do not know.  After nearly losing the knife 4 or 5 times, having it fall out of my pocket, or getting snagged and flung, I went back to my 710 and keep the RUKUS in my BoB as a spare.

I might send it to a knifemaker friend and have then drill and tap holes for a decent clip.

How do you like the handle on the Rukus? Can you get a secure grip on it? How large are your hands (if you don't mind me asking)

If you like the rukus look at the 630 skirmish also. It has the same blade length as the rukus only the skirmish has a fatter blade and a fatter handle. The skirmish has an S30V blade with titanium handles and frame lock. The rukus is a long knife but the handle seems thin to me, and i would say my hands are medium sized. Both are good knives and benchmade has a kick ass warranty. If you break it, they will fix it, simple as that.

I have big hands and shortish fingers.  I don't have a problem with the RUKUS's grip, it is thicker than most folders which makes up for its lack of depth.

It sounds like what you need is the Extrema Ratio M.P.C. You won't be satisfied with anything else once you hold one of these brutes. 1/4" thick N690 Cobalt Steel with a 1/4" thick lockback that has a cross bolt style safety to further lock the blade in place. Anticordal aluminum handles. Im telling you, hold one and all other folders will feel very wimpy. Here are the measurements and weight,

Total Length: 10.23"
Blade Length: 4.52
Weight: 8.64 Oz

I really like this blade. It is considered to be the strongest folding knife in the world and I believe it. It is the folder that Dork Ops copied their designs off of. It is the real deal. The edge is pretty thick for fine cutting tasks, but it is truly meant to be an indestructable folder that can double as a fixed blade. Here are a few pics of mine,

I have toyed with the idea of selling it recently to pay off some bills as I have a ton of other folders. It is a really cool hunk of steel and definitely worth the price.
