Don't know if this has been discussed prior to this post. I generally don't get into the knives forum unless I'm shopping (you guys helped me decide to get a SOG SEAL Pup) or I messed something up (like now).

I have a Benchmade Auto. To put it simply, I took it in the water and since then it seems like it doesn't open with the same amount of force as it used to. I don't know if it's gunked up or if the "spring" has lost tension or something. ot sure if it's even a problem caused from being in the water, but it happened after going in so...

Anyone have any suggestions? I haven't tooled around with it yet.... figured I'd ask some people with a little more experience with all things sharp.

Rust in the works? Take it apart, clean and oil it, and see if that helps.

No offense,

But DO NOT EVER TAKE IT APART!!!! You have a lifetime warranty. Use it. Send them $5 and the knife with a note of the problem. They will fix it to like new and return it to you.

If you disassemble it, you void the warranty. I have several Benchmades and have used the factory service many times. You will not be disappointed. They will even sharpen it for you. Voiding the warranty would be a real big mistake.

Be sure to lube and use some type of water displacing type oils whenever you use a folder around water, afterwards. They will last a lifetime.

Do they question how you got your auto knife? I got mine while on active duty... not on any more so I'm worried that somehow they will decide, "HEY, you're not supposed to have that... you're a meer civilian".

Civilians are permitted to own automatic knives in many states.  Make suire you live in one of them.

Don't use the Post Office.  If I remember correctly, automatic knives may not be mailed interstate.  Use a carrier like DHL, FedEx, UPS.  Remember to insure.

The G.I. "issue" could be a problem, since you are not supposed to have "liberated" government property.  Check you knife to see if if has any distinguishing marks that could raise a red flag.

Good luck.

I've had a couple of Benchmades, 2 Mini reflexes and a AFO.  When I got the 2nd Mini Reflex it was very slow to open, I put a couple of drops of oil on the pivot and opened it a few times and it was like another knife.  My best friend carries a AFO on the job as a fire fighter and has gotten his wet several times, he keeps it oiled and hasn't had any problems with it.  Benchmade is serious about their policies on selling/warrenty for the autos so be carefull.

I have taken my AFO apart a couple times. It's a little tricky getting it back together, but not really a big deal.

Problem solved... just need a liberal shot of erl in there and it's now flicking out good as new.

Thanks guys... I feel like a real tool for not having tried that in the first place.

Now, how about some recommendations on what kind of sharpening kit to add to my Amazon.com Wishlist?
