| Im looking to buy a good automatic knife. price range is $100 to $300. something built like a tank with a good blade. im looking at benchmade, masters of defense, etc. 3 -3.5 inch blade. I dont like tanto blades. thanks for the info |
| Microtech is great. No doubt, they're probably the king of the auto knife business. I've got a Benchmade 9053 AFO (a model 9050 that was sold to the military) and it works very well. Seems strong, I've never put it through really harsh treatment yet. It's very quick. My complaints are few. First, it's a little bulky, nothing I can't deal with. Second, the button is very small and recessed making it hard to activate. This is more of a problem, if you have large fingers you might want to avoid this one. I've heard many good things about the Benchmade 2550 mini-reflex. If you can find a 3550 you might like that one too. MJD |
| I have a Benchmade 2550 Mini-reflex that has the 3-1/4" plain blade. It is just the right size for EDC. I have seen them as low as $108.00 through the internet. A buddy of mine has the Benchmade "Mel Pardue" 5000 auto, which is a great knife and built like a tank, but the size is a bit large for pocket carry. |
Your chatting with one. (obviously your unfamilar with the operation of the lock system on the Recon 1 and how quickly it can be employed) Mike |
They are fast as hell. You can flick it out faster than most people cand find the button on their switchblade. |
| My vote is for Microtech, I have four. I have a HALO III, a D/A LCC and two mini socom elites (one with a OD green blade, one with a black blade). They are all great knives. The Halo III and mini socom elites are on my assault vest. The LCC is on me all the time in my DCU pocket. I would like to buy some more, like a SCARAB, but $ is an issue right now, trying to save for more firearms when I get back from this deployment. |
Actually, I am quite familiar with the action of the Recon 1, as it is essentially a knock off of the Arc-Loc action used for several years on the SOG Pentagon Elite knives. I sometimes carry a PE II and am quite skilled at using the locking lug to sling the blade out. While it is a faster system than most manuals, it is not quite as fast a high quality auto. An auto also does not require the movement of the wrist or coordination required by the SOG/recon 1 action. In a high stress situation, fine motor skills and freedom of movement are luxuries that may not be afforded. |
