I looked around and not found very much mentioned about them here. i was issued a Recon Tanto a while back. It has been a good knife so far but, I'm wondering if they are a good choice and if there is something else that might work better.
As far as non-custom, is CS a good maker?

While I don't own one personally, many of my friends do.  They are good knives.  Keep an edge well, very strong.  I just think they are ugly...

Check out their website, they put their knives through more tests then any other maker - and they use mostly AUS 8A stainless - really rugged stuff

Cold Steel - Toughest knives in the World!!!

I recommend the Oyabun - It's my finest fixed blade IMHO -> Oyabun

For a huge folder, I recommend the Vaquero Grande ->
Vaquero Grande and smaller brothers...

Also they have "San Mai III" steel which is the folded type steel used in the real samuri type swords that had the crazy sharp edges :)

G'luck

Explanation of San Mai III Steel

Q: What is San Mai III®?
San Mai means “three layers”. It is the term given to the traditional laminated blades used by the Japanese for swords and daggers. Laminated construction is important because it allows different grades of stainless steel to be combined in a single blade. This allows the bladesmith to make a blade that more exactly matches the performance characteristics he needs. A simple way to think of this type of construction is to imagine a sandwich: The meat center is hard, high carbon steel and the pieces of bread on either side are the lower-carbon, tough side panels. Generally the edge of the blade should be hard to maximize edge holding ability, but if the entire blade was hard it could be damaged during the rigors of battle. For ultimate toughness the body of the blade must be able to withstand impact and lateral stresses. Toughness is generally associated with “softness” and “flexibility” in steel, so that surprisingly, if an entire blade was made “tough” the edge would not be hard enough to offer superior edge holding. San Mai III® provides a superior blade with hard (higher carbon) steel in the middle for a keen, long lasting edge and tougher (lower-carbon) steel along the sides for flexibility.

Bottom of pic is my Cold Steel RT.
I personally know its a pretty tough knife. It has been used for all sorts of things that you shouldnt use a knife for and held up quite well. A couple of strokes on some leather usually brings the edge back to being able to give a smooth shave.
I guess it is comforting to hear that a piece of gear you have works well for other too.

I would own a cold steel.  Good knives from what I've heard.  Not a bad word about them... I just prefer the SOG Seal Pup knife to their knives, and I prefer Bugei katanas to their katanas.

I have carried a 4" Voyager Cold Steel for 10 years. I have abused this knife and it has never failed me. It holds a good edge and strong. Oh and yes it will put a good hole in a car door.

I've been looking at cold steel knives for a while, never seen one in person. Hearing you people talk about them I might actually break down and get one, $45
Looks like a decent price.

Indeed it's a great price.  Most of their knives can be had for around 40 bucks or so.  Good deal IMO.  If you want a tanto look at the Bugei Hissatsu

I have owned a few of their knives and have been pleased with all of them. I have been using an SRK for a few years now and really like it. The Cold Steel AUS-8A steel is actually the japanese equivelant of our 154 CM, good stuff.

I own/have owned several and the only problem i've had is I had to replace the pins right behind the blade on both my recon folders. Cold Steel had some faulty pins and sent me the replacements out right away.
