It looks like this will be the .50 I end up buying. My other choice got shot down for various reasons. Should I get the rifle with or without the scope and rings? Are there better scopes and rings for a lower or equal price? 600 yards will probably be the max distance I'll be shooting it unless I feel like driving a few hours. I'd prefer to only feel the pain of buying an expensive scope once though. MY plan is to relocate a 2 to 3 years from now. I'm hoping to find a place when I can shoot out to 1000+.
What do you use for a cleaning kit? What about cleaners? I currently use Break-Free CLP for everything. What ammo are you using? Are there any factory loads I should avoid. What seems to work the best? I'm thinking of getting ammo from survivalops.com. I probably won't shoot it enough for relaoding to be worth it. That could change though. Are there any monopods other than the Barrett one for $150? I know $150 isn't much when consider the rest of the rifle is around $5,000. Just would like some options when it comes to the monopod. And for the lefties. Have any of you had a problem shooting the 99 left handed? Any suggestions that might make it a better experience shooting it left handed? How's the recoil feel compared to a 5.56 AR? I know it will have more. It would be nice to know what to expect though. |

If all you're shooting is 600 yards I would keep the factory scope on it for now. If you plan on moving then save your money until you do and then buy the scope you want and put the factory scope on another rifle.
Cleaning stuff, try Boretech's Eliminator copper solvent for the heavy cleaning. You should pick up a bore guide to protect the throat, a shotgun cleaning kit will work but other companies like Boretech, Dewey and Tipton all make one piece rods that have bearings in the handles for ease of use. There's also 50 BMG bore brushes out there in brass and stainless. |

I use a Tipton one piece .50 carbon fiber rod. For ammo, I usually just use Federal M33. The recoil is harsher than my M107A1, but shooting prone is not too bad. I'd say that prone is like a 12 ga shotgun. The concussion is what gets you. Ten consecutive rounds will get a little uncomfortable. 10 rounds on the semi is nothing. Just take a break after 10 rounds until you are used to. |

As I've said before, my m1A doesn't kick bad...my M99 kicks less. The concussion and report are harsh...the recoil is anything but.

It may be less than a 12 ga, but for someone who never fired a .50 before, it gives them something to compare. I have had 125 lb females shoot the M99 with no problems. Like you and I said, it is the concussion that punishes you. I have not shot my M99 this year since the glass I have on it is no where the quality of the one on my M107, but I actually miss some of that concussion now. I would never sell the M99 due to that, it makes you appreciate the power behind a .50. OP, you will not regret your purchase. |

Just my 2 cents...
Search for the best deal, with or without the scope & rings. Buy it!!! Get some trigger time with it, upgrade scope later on (a good scope that won't break) And honestly, don't worry about recoil. It's really nothing. When you pull that trigger and send it, you'll smile ear to ear! |

I have a monopod on my AR-50 and use it less then half the time I take it out. Sometimes I think its more of a hindrance then a help, you have to keep it on the rifle all the time. If not then you have to take the time to set it up, on the AR-50 it has to be set right every time. If not the bolt handle will hit it if set to low and won't allow you to chamber a round. To high and you won't have a good scope alignment, forget trying to line up on the scope.
So, unless you really need one or feel like spending money ask yourself if you need it. Sandbags are cheap and are more stable then a monopod. |

Anything else for monopods? That's the only thing that hasn't been covered. The best price I've found so far is 5,200 including tax at a LGS. That's for the 32" barrel, tan cerakote with scope and rings. I like using the monopod on my M107A1 when shooting seated. Also, the range I go to requires that the muzzle does not face up when not shooting your weapon, so the monopod helps with that. I have not used it on my M99 yet. I'd just buy a Barrett monopod. At least you will know that it will fit properly. They sure are overpriced though. |

What scope? That's really expensive. The rifle at my shop is $3600 OTD. Granted, that's for the standard 32" with bipod Quoted:

That's pretty much full price for everything.

Time for an update. I got the rifle Monday. Luckily they were able to speed it up so it took about two weeks once ordered. A friend that wanted to shoot it is leaving in a couple days so I had asked if the order could be rushed. We went out to shoot it today, 5 rounds each. It doesn't look like the scope will need much adjustment, if any. I'm very happy with the purchase having never shot a 50 cal before. The recoil is a joke IMO. To me, it feels like somebody giving a mild push with the palm of their hand on your shoulder. The concussion actually seems worse as a spectator even when standing 15-20 feet directly behind the shooter. The first shot definitely made me |

My M99 must be broken...it kicks like a horse. I've only shot one kind of ammo through it, though, so maybe it's that.. It's the $2.90 API that UN Ammo Company sells at unammo.com. I was going to chrono it when I got a chance, but I need to get some other ammo anyway. |
