I shoot left handed but was looking at getting a right handed version of the AR-50. Is it at all possible to use the AR left handed with the cheek rest the way it is? Or is there anyway I could move the cheekrest to the other side and modify it so the bolt would clear?

Thanks

I don't think you can get your cheek on the stock comfortably.  Maybe order a left handed butt stock for the right handed gun.

When I looked at mine I could not see any way to do it without serious modification of the stock.  I just ended up shooting it RH, which was uncomfortable for me since rifle is one of the things I'm strongly LH dominate (ambidextrous on most things, one side or the other on a few).

I dont think outlaw is talking about modifying the stock. As he is talking about replacing the stock with a left handed stock.

If you are responding to my post, I was answering the OPs question.  I'd be curious to know if anyone has done Outlaw's suggestion though.

I don't think it's possible the bolt needs the space under the cheek rest when you pull the bolt back so no you can't just flip it around. Well you could but you would have to remove the cheek rest every shot.

A right handed model

You can see how the bolt goes under the check rest

Here you can see the groove for the check rest

If you just flip it the safety hits the check rest before the bolt opens all the way

An over view if you left the check rest switched

You could make it work if you cut a slot for the safety to move back futher but it might be better to get the left handed buttstock.

How much further back does the bolt need to come actually? I'm wondering if, after I would cut a notch out for the safety, would the bolt handle itself then hit the cheek rest?
I'm trying to just get a left handed model when they are available again, but I might have to settle with the RH one.

about an inch or 1 1/2" it's not much and the spent case may come out how it is. I didn't think to check that. I can tomorrow if you want?

The other thing is the bolts that were in the check rest did not go all the way through when I fliped it because of the grove and the nuts are inset into the buttstock like so

You could go and buy longer bolts but the nuts wouldn.t be flush on the other side. If that matters to ya.

Cool, thanks for all the help.
