I cannot find any load data for spotter/tracer loads in 50bmg pages...there was a web page with a bunch of data for various projetiles, but I've apperently lost it. So, Can anyone help me out with a 5010 load for spotter/tracer projectiles?

Quoted:
Normal loading for these in a .50 BMG case is 175-190 grains with 190 being MAX. Just be careful when loading these and don't get generous with the powder charge. +1. And they sure can start a fire after a ricochet. Only shoot in WET or SNOW conditions. Few opportunities to shoot them safely out here in NM or TX. -David Edgewood, NM |
| Recommend 170 grains of 5010 and that will give you a velocity of approx. 1850 fps depending on your powder speed. No more than 180 grains is needed or recommended as being safe with that projectile. The spotter tracer bullet was designed for 1745 feet per second 78 feet from the muzzle. Much higher velocity than this could cause the bullet to go off plus it weighs 833 grains. |

Excelent info, thanks. I'll start some up and run them thru the chrono this weekend. Thanks for the help, everyone |

Seeing how this is a thread on safety when loading ST's, I'll just pass this along as far as limits go.
I know the ST's can be pushed at a higher loading do to the fact that I was standing next to someone when they were shooting them. The rounds were ringing the muzzle brake and the blast was a loud crack and not the usual thump. I asked the person shooting them what he had loaded them to, he said "220 grains of 5010"!!! I DO NOT recommend loading them that hot, I was amazed that the rifle didn't explode and told him what the normal loading was. After that I took a few extra steps back while he continued shooting the couple he had left. |

results of 170grains....1637-1678fps. Temp is about 34f, and I'm using a 24" barrel. The necks were sooty, probably due to the low temperatures. No overpressure signs. In the summer, this would probably be a hotter load with enough pressure to seal the neck. But, I won't have warmer temps for several months now. I wasn't going for accuracy, but it grouped to about 2.5".
Thanks everyone. |
