I want to get a SHF UltraMag50 upper and was wondering what length to get.  I doubt that I/my wife would be shooting it past 700yds.  Would the 22 vs the 29 make enough difference to warrant the extra cost (I am a cheap bastid)?  Anyone know the muzzle velocity difference?  Would it make a noticeably louder/stronger blast at the muzzle?

7" isn't going to affect you much at 700 or less, you'll probably only lose about 200 FPS between the two barrel lengths. As far as blast and noise goes, teh .50 is already LOUD and I wouldn't think that you would see much difference.

So if saving a litlle money is what you're looking for, get the 22" barrel.

If you really know you're only shooting to 700 yds, I agree 100% with 50 Shooter.  If you EVER want to shoot at a match at 1000 yards (and its a lot of fun, I can tell you) then get the 29" due to the additional velocity.

Both will shoot effectively to 1000+ yards.  Its just harder to dope the wind the slower your bullet is going.

Optimal 1000-yard + 50 BMG barrel lenth is from 32-34" in my opinion which gives excellent velocity even with the slowest powders.
