Hi all, I am new here. It seems like a terrific site! I am just getting into the .50 BMG competition game. I have been reloading and shooting for 45+ years. I have coming a Ferret50 SuperComp with a 36" barrel and would like to know which scope you would chose other then a Nightforce? A Sightron, Burris XTR or a Tasco Super Sniper are my choices because of $$ and your choice is and why? Thanks in advance!! ...Ironhorse... |

I would choose the Super Sniper because they are proven to take the abuse of a .50 and their warranty is excellent. If you ever have any problem with it, it will either be fixed or replaced. In its price range, I don't feel that there are any scopes that come close to the quality of a Super Sniper. As far as the other two scopes go, there are many different Sightrons, so I don't know which one you'd be looking at. But I guess it doesn't really matter, as it would be a crap shoot regardless. The Burris might be okay, but I can't say for sure. The XTR costs about 2 1/2 times as much as the Super Sniper. At that point, I'd just spend a little more and go for a Leupold MK IV. I know that many people use Burris Black Diamonds, which I believe are a little cheaper than the XTRs. That may not be a bad option, though it wouldn't be my first choice. |
SS are hard to beat IMHO... but saying that...I have owned 3 of them and never regretted the money..........on the other hand.......the first time I looked through a nightforce 5.5X22 NPR1 scope, I sold all my SS and went out and bought 3 nightforces. Just dont faint when you see the price!!!![]() Slug-O |

A supersniper will work fine until you can afford a Nightforce, Leupold Mark 4, USO, or S&B. I'm using a 5.5-22x56 NF NXS on my ALS and have a Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25 coming for my 338 Lapua. Supersnipers are fine if you understand that they don't have the best glass available and lots of folks prefer a variable. But they will work fine and get you trigger time behind your 50. Just don't expect NF or Mark 4 glass out of a $300 scope. I've owned two, both 20x which were serviceable. One I purchased outright for my first 50 BMG scope, the second came with 338 Lapua AR-30. I've since sold both and moved on to better glass but they retain their value well. I sold the first 20x for $285 on ebay with substantial ring marks. I sold the second 20x to a buddy in Colorado for $250 but that was a friend-friend deal so I probably could have got at least $270 for it had I ebayed it. I've heard a few bad things on the AR15.com Precision Rifles forum about the 10x side focus Supersnipers coming apart, even on smaller calibers (308). I'd suggest sticking with the rear focus models for 50 BMG use. So far as power, that's a purely personal test. I've never shot targets at 1000 yards with less than 20x but I have a friend that shoots a Barrett M99 with a 16x Mark 4 and wins his share of hunter class trophies with it. Strictly personal preference. -David Edgewood, NM |
I just bought the LRS-1 for my AR-50. I haven't mounted it yet but I'm glad you are having good results with it. It's a great scope for the money. |
