| I am gonna get on the list for a Bohica upper and am having a tough time deciding on the barrel length. I live in SD so long shots will be available, but i will not be competing. I like the portability of the 24, but dont want to give up a lot of velocity. What do you all think? 24 or 30? |

I too live in SD. :) I went with the 24" so I could throw it in my truck with me if I want to. I have done this several times. A 30" would not be anywhere near as maneuverable. Pretty much need to haul it around in a case. I have a regular cab chevy, and I can lay the .50 between my GF and I without any trouble. Had it laying there next to my benelli and a bolt gun the other day. Won't be able to do that with a 30". I also will not be using this for competition... just shooting stuff. The 24" is the perfect length for me. The other day I was driving around at dusk, and saw a coon running down our fenceline. I stopped the truck, jumped out and went prone on the road. Did it pretty quickly and didn't have any problems getting out of the truck. Coon was about 100yds when I saw him. By the time I got on him he was about 175yds... and he was running flat out the entire time. Couldn't out-run the .50 BMG though. hehe Stepped it off at 190yds. Coon was VERY dead and did an awesome roll before coming to a stop. Taking a 643gr bullet up the tail pipe shut him down in a hurry. I think the impact pushed him forward faster than he was running. lol Big ol' boar never knew what hit him. |
We talk on the phone a bit, as I'm designing his website. I've been to his shop to take product photo's. He's a stand up guy! Not sure how much weight you'd save... that would be a question better asked of chris. Sorry. I live in Huron. :) |
| 30" seemed like a great compromise to me. A 36"er, even broke down, is still a long bitch. If you're a long range competitor it would make sense, but I'm not and I'd rather have something that can still go the distance and is still pretty portable. The upper fits in the back of our compact car in a hard case, which is damn nice. The 36" fluted barrel looks amazing, but the inconvenience made it a no-go for me. |

For serious long range shooting, 29-30" is a minimum for barrel length. Sure an 18 or 24" barrel will go bang and shoot the bullet out but not fast enough to do serious work with. I'd say optimal barrel length is 32-33" for long range shooting. 29-30" is a good compromise. 16-24" is just burning powder. That said, if you already have a 50 BMG or two for serious long range work, one carbine length 50 BMG would be as fun as a barrel of monkeys for plinkin. -David Edgewood, NM |
