So my father and I want to get a 50 before anything else (ban wise) happens.

We would like a Barret, can anyone suggest which one to go with. At first we wanted the Semi repeater, but I think the bolt repeater is better, any thoughts?

If I were doing it, I would start with their flagship.

The M82A1 is so controllable you can expend all 10rds in very quick succession for quite a display of firepower on target.

Ok, so thats the semi: typically semis dont have the accuracy potential that bolts do, does this hold true with 50s (im guessing so but never know) does the barrett semi shoot as well as there bolt or single?

If sheer accuracy was my goal, I would have George Gardener build me a magazine fed rifle or buy one from McMillan.

If I wanted a very capable rifle, though likely slightly less accurate, I would still opt for an M82A1.

Only my opinion, as my research on the matter is about 1.5yrs old.  I opted instead to divert funds to M16's.

Good luck!

ETA:  I think a worked over M99 set the 1000yd record some time ago.  Something like 4.25" @ 1000.

A worked M99 did set the world record.  I believe the final measurement was like 2.67 inches at 1000 yards.

As far as the 82A1, all I've heard from it, accuracy wise, is out of the box you're looking at 1.5MOA at best with match ammo.  Again, this is just what I've heard about it on various forums.  If I could afford one, I'd have one.

These are GAP 50bmg's...

Well, I think they are 50's, but you get the idea.

The botton one, with the Italian camo is a 50......because it was mine.

I ended up selling it to another known net gun enthusiast, who I believe sold it since.

Was a nice rifle, but I had George build me a .338.

To the OP, I would get the 82A1.  I had an M99 and sold it for the 82.  But sold the 82 a little while back.

I'm debating whether to eventually get another 82 or the Serbu 50 (if that ever comes out).

beltfed, thanks for the extra info, im now back to seriously considering a 82a1, my father would pref to get two of the bolt guns now as opposed to one of the 82A1s.  I think he would like to stick one away for the time being, I duno, his money not mine, im just helping with the research.

Cold, glad to see you're working your way up from the .458 socom and getting into the .50 bmg round.  Of course, once you get your 50 the only place to go is artillery.

I'm sort of in the same place you are and have been doing a lot of research on the various 50's available, but don't have any trigger time with the various models yet.  However, keeping this disclaimer in mind, it is my understanding that the semi-auto Barrett is not going to be capable of the accuracy a good bolt action 50.  Also, for the price you're going to end up paying for a the Barrett semi, you could literally buy two good quality bolt action guns from some of the other mfgs.

If you really like the appearance of the Barrett bolt action gun, you might also take a look at the Viper made by Bluegrass Armory.  It's pretty close in appearance to the Barrett, has the reputation for being just as accurate and is less expensive.  I actually have one on order, so with any luck in a few months I'll be able to give you a first hand report.

Also, might take a look at some of the models mfg. by State Arms, which again have an excellent reputation, are supposed to be extremely accurate and will also be cheaper than a Barrett.

Finally, if you really want a semi-auto, Mark Serbu is supposedly finalizing a semi-auto version of his current 50BMG, that again will be substantially cheaper than a Barrett semi-auto.  Will probably have to wait a while if you go this route, since gun still isn't in production and I suspect there's going to be a waiting list.  But, if you do go this route, you might well save enough money over the Barrett semi auto that you could also afford a bolt action .50.

Finally, not my intention to bash the Barrett's.  They are one of the best known mfg. of the 50, make an excellent product, and, because they are so well known should hold their value pretty well if you ever decide to sell.  Rather my point is that there are a number of other excellent mfgs. out there that you should definitely take a look at,  including: SERBU, State Arms, Bluegrass Armory, Ferrett, AR50, the EDS(?) Windrunner (pricey but very neat bolt action that's accurate and can be fully broken down).

I always enjoy the opinions of other big bore owners, thanks for the tips Pippin. I have looked into the Windrunner as well as the Arma Lite.

The problem is more that when my father saw the Barrett at the Shot Show the last 2 years, he has decided that is the one he wants. So Im kind of looking into the rest of it for him.  Anyways, once you get the 50 you mentioned above, please do post a report of link me to it so that I can read up on it. Im looking at gettting the 50 around end of April or early May so I can take it out to the Ranch and shoot it at Pdogs.

Should be interesting...

The 82A1 looks like the premeir option for a sport shooter.  The 95 looks like the most economical option, but I personally wouldn't stand the recoil.  The 107 upgrade of the 82 is nice, but the added cost is really only intended as a product improved version for military consumption.

Cold, I seem to remember there being some kind of video on Youtube showing what happened when when a p-dog met up with a 50 bmg round.  I won't go into the details - let's just say they were terminated with extreme prejudice.

I'm not sure if its still up because the video met with some negative reactions because a number of people felt in painted hunters in a bad light (I think there was an accompanying soundtrack which I could see offending some).

My Viper is supposed to be shipping some time in early March (have had to wait because I'm ordering a LH version).  Will be happy to post a quick review.
