| I have a 99-1 and I was wondering if anyone has ever fired one without the muzzle break attached. How much more recoil would you expect. Would an increase in recoil be worth the decrease in blast that's directed back toward the shooter? |
|
Naw. I don't think you want to. I don't own one, but did find this interesting snippet... "The muzzle brake that is used on other Barret .50 caliber rifles ....has demonstrated in quantitative studies an incredible reduction in recoil of 69%" from Barrett 's own website www.barrettrifles.com/news/SoldierofFortuneMay-2001Model99.pdf Personally, I think it would just pound the hell out of you. |
|
Truly a "hold my beer and watch this" moment. With the ambulance on speed-dial. If you do it, make sure to post the video. Seriously, though, the only reason I can see to remove the brake is for a suppressor. Most of the blast goes to your neighbors, anyway. Why make them a little happier, but put you in misery? If it's that big an issue, get a brake like EDM uses that has about 100 small holes, rather than the side chambers that blow only two directions. ETA: Also, on the 99's that I've shot, the scope is dangerously close to you to begin with. I've got a scar on my face to prove it. Why make that even more of an issue? |
Good one ! ![]()
Only in my dreams Thanks for the responses everyone. I kinda figured it wasn't too smart of an idea but I guess I needed to hear it from someone else. |

I wish i had the link of the arab joke where a man is standing in a shooting range with a wooden rifle i assume .50 bmg and no brake. He doesnt know how powerful the thing is and it knocks the guy to the ground sending the weapon flying into ballistic glass and shatering it. If you try it send me the video tape. |
here's a video close to it, if my memory is working. Video |
I think he's talking about this one. So damn funny. Broke the door and trapped himself in there. |
It was a .577 T-Rex, not a .50 BMG. It also wasn't an Arab joke. And here is the real video in it's entirity.www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQJSZs-euZU |
Yeah, it was a .577 T-Rex, and for the record, the .50 BMG has 2-3000 more ft. lbs. of muzzle energy. |
|
Here's a 50cal from the Blue Grass Armory sight fired without the MB. Doesn't look like fun to me!
|
Yeah, but the 577 weighs in at like 14-15 pounds total weight with no apparent muzzle brake. I'm tempted to call it relatively moot. Yeah, the 50 will probably kick even harder without a muzzle brake even if it's heavier due to the increase in powder volume exiting the bore under high pressure. But one only needs to look at the 577 videos to see that it's a DUMB idea. |
|
As far as that T-rex goes the stock on it is all wrong for the recoil. And the America bashing Arab that owns the thing needs it stuffed up his ARSE. All of the video of it is on accuratereloading.com you to sign up to watch the videos. There are guys that can shoot the think, but for the most part Saeed likes to tourture his little camel jockey friends for his amusement and for erotic reasons. Oh and by the way doing the Barrett without the brake will void the warrenty. Unless you have oil money like that little UAE turd its just plain stupid. |
Barrett claims that shooting it without the muzzlebrake will damage the rifle. If you're man enough to drop over $3K on a rifle just to tear it up, you're more of a man than I.
|
it was a .577 tryannasaur |
uhh- I hate to tell you this because it might damage your perception of Arabs but accuratereloading.com is an ARAB website based in the UAE I believe. They are dangerous game hunters who travel to Africa for safari- its just on the other side of the Red sea from them. The guys shooting the T-Rex are people coming by the shop or friends. No one is making fun of the fact they are Arabs- they are just wearing normal clothes over there. Its exactly like us playing a practical joke on each other here, except we don't wear funny looking robes and hats. |
|
The question begs: Why? Why do you wish to shoot a .50 BMG without a brake? Give me an 8lb sledge, come over to my crib and I'll whack your shoulder with it. At least I'll get some personal satisfaction, and you won't damage your weapon...it's a win-win in my estimation. |
Like I stated in my post The American bashing Arab. I am full aware of where Saeed is from. Yes he does indeed hunt in africa. If you were to spend say an afternoon in Accurate Reloading Forums under the The Political Forum A chronosynclastic infundibulum and read what Saeed has to say about the U.S.A. in genereral you would better understand my drift. |
