What barrel length would you choose for a UL-50: 22" or 24"?  Also, how does the recoil compare to other 50 BMG guns? The only 50 I have shot was an older Watsons Weapons AR-15 upper, and the recoil on this felt pretty light-- similar to a 20 guage.

Since this requires you to switch out the hammer on the lower, I assume I would need a dedicated lower.  What lower would you recommend?

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of the different barrel lengths available (any differences in muzzle velocity, report, or recoil?), and how the recoil compares to other 50's?

Can anyone comment on installation of the larger hammer?  Does this make swapping between 50 BMG and 5.56 uppers impractical??

Does anyone have a recommendation for a dedicated lower??

What is your intended use for it?  What ranges will you be shooting and what accuracy do you expect?  If you are shooting short ranges I would get the lightest/shortest version just to make it easier to transport, I plan to shoot long ranges so I got the 29".

I have shot a buddy's State Arms 50s (he has two, one full stock and one tactical) and the recoil honestly felt about the same as the UL50.  It's a fair comparison to say its about like a 12 guage.

You will need a dedicated lower.  I used a CNC machined aluminum lower from Sun Devil, but any AR lower will work just fine.  When you assemble the lower there are some changes for the UL50 upper, leave out the disconnector and spring, bolt catch assembly, and recoil buffer retainer, since they won't be used.

Recoil should be similar from all bbl lengths, since the brake is the same size/design.  The added weight from a longer bbl might soften recoil slightly.  I added almost 4 lbs of lead to my buttstock to improve balance and handling of the gun, and haven't shot it without.

Can anyone comment on installation of the larger hammer?  Does this make swapping between 50 BMG and 5.56 uppers impractical??

The hammer isn't larger, its a totally different design, the other necessary mods will preclude using the same lower for the UL50 and an AR.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a dedicated lower??

The coolest lower I know of for a .50mbg would be this one:

Chairborne-  thanks for hooking up a fellow Airmen with some good info.  Any idea on the different barrel lengths effect on muzzle velocity?

No problem, you at Herby, Eglin, Tyndall, or Patrick?  As far as MV vs bbl length I think the best bet would be to ask Marcos (at Ligamec, makers of the UL50) via email if he knows what the differences are on a chrono.  I don't think the difference between the 24 and 29 would be very significant, but the 18 and 24 probably differ more.  The 2" diff between the 22 and 24 probably won't matter enough to worry about either.  If you are in the Hurlburt area I can bring my UL50 with me on a "business trip" I am making down that way if you'd like to shoot it.

Actually, my profile hadn't been updated in 4 years. Originally from FL, then CA, and now I'm in OH at Wright-Patt. But thanks for the offer!  If you come through Wright-Patt, give me a holler.  I'll check with Ligamec to see if they have the MVs.

Chairborne...nice to see that you bought the .50 that you were talking about over there at the 'Deid last summer.  I've been buying .50 projo's the last couple years in hopes of getting a .50 but just can't decide on .50 BMG or .50 S/T as well as a UL 50 or a Serbu Carbine.  I need to go back over to the 'Deid so I can afford to expand the collection!

I've been on a tear lately, I bought two guns this week.    I'm going to Iraq soon for a year, and that will pay for all my new toys pretty easily.  I couldn't decide which 50 to go with so I finally just picked up the phone and ordered the UL50, its the sexiest one in the price range.  I couldn't be happier with it to tell you the truth.  I just got back (at 0330) from some late night tracer/tannerite/propane fun with it.    I'm packing all the fun into my schedule that I can before I go to jail, err the monastery Iraq.  Good to hear from you again, if you get up Baghdad way anytime in the next year shoot me an IM and we can have a near beer.
